Pres. to Propose Paid Sick Leave for Workers

WASHINGTON -- President Obama will call on Congress to require companies to give workers up to seven days of paid sick leave a year, a senior adviser said Wednesday.

Obama will also take executive action to give at least six weeks of paid leave to federal employees after the birth or adoption of a child, Senior White House Adviser Valerie Jarrett said.

And Obama wants Congress to spend $2.2 billion to help states and cities develop paid family leave programs.

Jarrett announced the new initiatives in a post on the job networking site LinkedIn -- a venue chosen, she said, because its audience was best positioned to drive change in their own workplaces.

"As our workforce and our families have continued to evolve over time. too many of our workplaces have failed to keep pace," Jarrett told reporters.

Obama, who will travel to Baltimore tomorrow and return to Washington for dinner with British Prime Minister David Cameron, will make the proposal at a roundtable with working women Thursday.

I am all for paid sick leave; it's only fair. But it should be up to the employer, whether to offer it as a "benefit", not yet another law.

I'm fortunate to work for an employer who puts the needs of their employees at a top priority. Although, we are building a new business, I am given health insurance, vacation time and sick leave. If you want an employee to be devoted to your business and success, you have to treat them well. You will GET WHAT YOU GIVE. The choice is yours.

No LadyLiddy the choice is not yours. It is the choice of an administration that will dictate what you give employees. Today a few extra sick days, tomorrow higher pay, extended paid time off for vacations, higher cost of health care, additional regulations for higher certain classes of employees, more reporting requirements, reduced notice to employers ahead of union elections and the list goes Oh wait, some of that is already happening.

Freedom to employ who who want and at what cost based on your business model, I think not.

I worded for the Feds for 20 years and you earned Sick Leave at some number of hours per month. I was not GIVEN to you. As a result of some employees taking off sick every time they didn't have any Sick Days left, there were/are some that simply have no more sick leave left.

Why are U.S. businesses so against time off? Countries in Europe mandate vacation time. You can't work people to death- they need time off to rejuvenate and then they will work better.

another big reat sucking sound going south or somewhere else anywhere but the United States cost of business just too damn expensive
