A Viewer Writes: Salisbury Festival

Joe

I can't believe how no story on the Salisbury Festival New layout SHITTY NO TURN OUT even before the rain CARNIVAL has everything jammed in lot so tight no room to walk ELECTRIC WIRES on Division St covered with boards so high I am surprised no one got hurt (maybe cause no one was there) definitely not ADA compliant ONLY good thing is food from PHAT BOYZ across from Health Dept You should take a look today. Oh yeah no car show like always on Saturday, they say because it does not bring revenue in, but it does bring people and I thought this is what it is about. This change was Brad Gillis idea and he is away on vacation, perfect timing you think?

Well, something had to be done ... maybe this new layout wasn't the right change, but if you had a better idea why didn't you offer it? It's just like voting...if you don't vote, you shouldn't complain. Salisbury is the whiniest town I've ever seen! DO SOMETHING BESIDE COMPLAIN!!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

While many people like Brad, he is a little too big for his britches in my opinion. What has made him such an expert on everything? My understanding is the second generation of Gillis/Gilkerson are arrogant and entitled. Are they really the saviors of downtown? Doesn't seem like it to me...just looking to turn a fast buck.

Anonymous said...

10:06 - You're right - DO SOMETHING BESIDE COMPLAIN!!!!!!!!!!! Personally I've found it best to just ignore downtown Salisbury altogether. The few times I've had to go downtown I thought I might be in Detroit or some other hellhole.

Was always successful at the old location until it turned into a beer fest and the "kids" took it over. And there was always promises that the river was going to be cleaned up but has not happened. Now they think downtown is going to be revitalized so lets make use of THAT space which will stay the same as before. Where is the fried oyster truck? It ain't going to be the same but then again changes are a'comin. I speak from a bit of knowledge since I chaired that event for 4 years and worked on it from the beginning. Will go by the wayside like English Grill, etc

I agree. Worked downtown last week until about 2:30am, no one but Bums, excuse me beggers and homeless people. Did not feel safe to me and my crew.

WaWa after 1am is not a safe place to be.

Silly people this was design. Why not have a festival with no one attending. It only brings down the overall perception of what city is really worth, a win win for the city and the gillis empire!

Anonymous said...

many of us have done more than complain. but the liberals and queers ideas were put into effect because of ireton.
the festival is crap as is downtown. and i won't go near it as i went for the car show. hope it dies a fast death. like downtown will do. it's all a joke but costing tax payers money.
downtown is for the lieing muslum obombma lovers and queers now.

I have yet to attend a carnival that I have not had to walk over wires in tight spaces. Carnivals are not the same as Amusement Parks Have you been to Maryland or Delaware State Fair?

It seems anything Salisbury tries brings out the pessimistic folks on this site.

It is sad that the first mention of the Salisbury Festival I have seen on here is a person complaining about it and some comments criticising others work. Wish you people would jump in and build up, not tear down Did the letter writer and commenters make their ideas of what they would like to see at Salisbury Festival known to the committee. If you didn't you can only blame yourself that things are not to your liking.

I enjoyed my chats with friends and family last evening. Also had some good eating and hearing my kind of music Too bad storms came cutting our evening shorts. I will be there again today- not looking for things to complain about but to have a great time.

They did not want the car show because The Wheels that Heal club was not going to pay to be there, they donate all of their money to people in need. Powellville Vol Fire dept did not show because they almost doubled the price to set up and then wanted a part of the procedes from the sale.

I saw a beautiful red 56 or 57 Chevy pickup going north by the Centre.I looked hard to see if you were driving it,but it was some guy with white hair, like mine.

10:06 suggestions are made, but the Mayor has the attitude that it's his way or the highway.

11:40. Well said. Enjoy the beautiful day!

Yes, have vendors pay and charge them an additional 15% of profits. Notice there are less vendors then in the past. Safety is an issue with the new design and then the thugs that come out at night don't make it a safe place for families.

I can't knock Brad for trying to breath new life into something that has become clearly stale.
He's going about it the wrong way. You wanna get people from 100-200 miles away to come to the Sby Festival? Even fill up hotel/motel rooms for it? Book the Duck Dynasty reality show family. At the very minimum Phil, Si, Jase and Miss Kay. I guarantee the Sby Festival would be the most successful event ever held on the whole Eastern Shore. These reality show TV celebrities are relatively inexpensive to book and they are packing the houses and venues when they make appearances.

Anonymous said...

I couldn't agree more with 10:19. Brad Gillis is as arrogant as they come. Everything Brad and his dad Palmer do is self serving. They will throw you under the bus in a heartbeat.

Anonymous said...

The rainbow flags were the flamboyant mayors idea. Always drinking and driving. Great leader. Not...

Anonymous said...

Did not go because of move

Anonymous said...

Don't like the new location. And, without Powell ville oyster fritters, there is no reason to go. Won't be going again.

Of course Jimbeau Ireton and Fake Day seized the opportunity to tell the few who were there that things downtown and elsewhere in Salisbury are great, thanks to them!

From an outsider looking in: Salisbury has a bad rap. The overwhelming sense (correctly or not) is that it is very dangerous in that city. Until that changes NOTHING will get any better in that town. It's such a diamond in the rough... It COULD be a destination stop along Route 50 - like Berlin is now, and what Cambridge is now attempting to do. But it needs the right leadership. Salisbury needs a really good press agent, for starters. Trust me on this.

Trust me it will never be a Berlin or Cambridge. There is no real downtown area. Just a very small block of run down out of code fire trap buildings.

I heard they didn't have the car show, because the city wouldn't pay for porta potties and all the food vendors had to pay for their own. This is just what I heard. How come everybody else is anonymous?

4:38 is correct. The bypass diverted all the "money" traffic away from downtown SBY. I am surprised that the 7-11 is still in business at 349/Rt. 50. The old McDonalds was wise to move to 349. Cambridge won't divert the traffic around the city. Vienna is an example of what happens when you take the summer traffic away - no economic activity there. The bypass was planned and built to enrich the good ole boys that bought up the property prior to its construction. Do a tax search on some of the properties that are now worth millions that were bought for next to nothing just before the plans were released.

Apparently they've decided to turn the festival into a tollbooth. Some fees make sense for exhibitors because of costs for electric, etc.

IIRC last year an exhibitor told me their 8x8 or 10x10 space cost them $800. If there are fewer attendees it figures it will be harder to make a buck.

Car shows anywhere and everywhere are a people magnet. We looked forward to the show there in the past, actively supported it, and Wheels That Heal only made it better.

Our group went to DE today instead; there's 25-30 meals, beverages, etc that didn't get bought in the 'bury.

Festival was awesome today! We went at 12 and just got home at now. Six hours. Good food. Great vendors. Spent some money on coat rack dog stuff and in a new store Angellows? On Plaza. Awesome and fun.

That entire downtown area is getting too bad to drive through...prostis, pan handlers, and homeless. We used to get chicken at the "Crack Royal" store on the corner by the overhead bridge, but we are too afraid to get out of our car so we drive all the way over to the Royal in Hebron.

Anonymous said...

Was it Powellville FD that did the fritters? We were so disappointed they weren't there this year as well as the cars, because looking and talking with the other car enthusiasts kept my husband occupied while I strolled around. And yes I did spend money. I've bought jewelry, carvings and other things throughout the years not because I need anything but because the vendors were nice.

I took my 12 y/o daughter on the plaza to get some pizza at that fairly new pizza place. As we walked by the stage with the groups of young people trying to sing my daughter said "these people are weird." I advised her that she shouldn't have said that and it wasn't very lady like, but I have to admit she was right.

What a moron. Of course Cambridge won't divert traffic around the city because it is surrounded by water. Some people just make the most ignorant comments and people believe them.

April 26, 2014 at 7:24 PM

That is correct and the fact that the Daily Times quit allowing anonymous comments put the last nail in their coffin. They went completely downhill after that. This blog, them pulling anonymous comments and them limiting articles viewed killed their paper. Right after that they bailed from Salisbury.

Anonymous said...

Powellville was just to damn cheep to show up. They had fritters there and they were good. I do enjoy Powellvilles but they just wanted the whole pie. Really

Anonymous said...

It was a nice stop until they built the bypass. That killed the small businesses

Anonymous said...

I knew someone was paying for it since he makes at most $13/hr at Wal-Mart. I know he wrote on Jake Day's Facebook about coming to the next Council meeting and gonna go on record saying he's his own man. LOL. Again, he may be the nicest guy on the planet, but his resume is mighty thin about leading others without supervision.

Anonymous said...

Lorraine, people post as anonymous because they are fearful of being attacked, in this mess up community, whether it be bullied online or in person.

They can sugar coat it all they want.

Anonymous said...

There is a community in PA that runs a multi-million dollar music festival every year in their DOWNTOWN. Millions of people attend every year.
Attendance is free and the music is paid for by a percentage of the profits from the beer / wine/ food vendors.
They have been doing it for over 25 years, with paid and volunteer staff.

Your piddly nothing of a ghetto whiny complaining "festival" is a joke. Always was, always will be.

Maybe you can grill up some more chicken in the mall parking lot and call that a festival too... oh yea, you already do that.

Classless community.

If Cambridge was surrounded by water it would be an island. Prior to the current bridge being built to replace the old bridge, there were studies/plans to build a longer bridge that would have connected with Rt. 50 below Rt. 16 and where the Hyatt is now. That would have provided a route that would not have had stop lights and traffic bottle neck in the summer months. The plan was shot down by the city as it would have decimated the businesses in Cambridge.

Anonymous said...

Funny, I was there and it was packed yesterday. Lots of people and some great booths. Sounds like you just don't want to admit something went well for the town.

@10:40,

It would still be very easy to bypass Cambridge, perhaps have a better understanding of something before you insult others.

You are to stupid to get the point. Dorchester County is nearly surrounded by water and swamp.

The main reasons we in powellville did not show up was because they wanted 15 percent of the of our gross income not 15 percent of our net income after the supplies were subtracted out. Then they wanted us to buy an electronic cash register so that we wouldn't cheat them. We have always given them a sizable donation when done each year and have been going since the very first one.

One thing I'll say for the Chamber - more people than any year in recent memory. I didn't like the location, but the turnout was big.

Ask anyone with RE in Salisbury when they did that in the past 10 years other than the few connected developers getting sweet heart deals. When was the last time you heard of a bank robbery, home invasion and drug dealer running over a car full of cops in Cambridge all in one week?
