Don't You Ever Say We Didn't Tell You What Was Coming

A quick drive around Salisbury and it's easy to see the massive inventory of empty buildings, some of which have been empty for many, many years.

While Mayor Ireton pounds his chest when a new bar or restaurant opens on the Plaza, hundreds of jobs disappear in not so traveled places like Industrial Parks and WBOC and the Daily Times says nothing.

Detroit may be getting their bailout by Obama but I highly doubt Ireton is going to get such favors from O'Malley and Obama. There's a LOT more inventory out there but at $3.50 a gallon for gas I'm not wasting my time or money gathering each and every one of them, it's too massive.

To a liberal this is progress.

What a shame.

Joe on my way to work yesterday I took notice to all empty buildings it was a sad sight to see. another sad sight is our government officials do absolutely nothing to help turn the situation around.

There are empty buildings everywhere. For the life of me, I do not understand why the County would be in such a rush to lease a facility for the Bd. of Elections especially since we have kazillions of empty buildings in and around Salisbury. A guy just approached me this week and said if I would take over the former Shinns building that he would give me 4 months free rent. When I told him no, he then said he would give me the entire construction time + 6 months free rent.

Unfortunately I informed him that I am perfectly satisfied with my present location at the Georgetown, DE Airport Industrial Park.

Salisbury/Wicomico have been devastated economically from this recession.

The leaders didn't realize that when they invoked impact fees that they 'Shot the Goose that Laid the Golden Egg'. Every economist knows that it is the construction industry that leads out of a recession. Everyone except the ones in Salisbury/Wicomico.

I have lived here all my life and I have never seen the economy this bad. Sure, there are a few fast food jobs, cash register jobs, but by and large there are no manufacturing jobs. And so the Gov just keeps doling out more and more independence cards(welfare).

In my opinion, Pollitt has done a piss poor job in the economic development department. I would have to issue him a failing grade of -F- in that department. And as far as O'Malley, Maryland would have been better off with no Governor at all.

Just take a ride on Eastern Shore Drive and take a gander at all the empty bildings. It would be amazing but this is what happens when our governing bodies know nothing better than increase taxes. And then they will insist the population is growing. Yep, they are right. It is growing but with the wrong types. More are coming and on assistance and the businesses and owners are moving out of the county. But we can't convince them they are failing the county and it's people. They are always the smartest ones in the room. Right!!!!!

This is not a defense of the policies Ireton, O'Malley or Obama.

The closing of the North Point Branch of M&T Bank was made as the result of the acquisition of Wilmington Trust.

7:55, The local government IS doing something about it. The local government is taking over these empty spaces and the rent, well, you and I are paying for it. Tri County Council building. Regional Library and other government organizations are filling the empty spaces there. The states attorneys office. WIC, family dental and the election board. Non profits are taking other spaces but like every one else is saying, it's NOT being filled with manufacturing companies that provide even decent paying jobs. WHY train people if there isn't a business to provide jobs? Pollitt and Ireton have failed Salisbury as well as Barrie Tilghman and the former Dream Team Council.

I would like to see a canned goods and non perishable food store come to Salisbury.Items like milk and bread would be optional, but mainly canned goods and non perishables. The old Rite Aid on Mt Hermon Rd would be a possible site?

This condition is a direct result of NOT reinvesting in quality of life issues. You idiots sit here and scream cut, cut, cut with regard to any taxation. Look around; this County spends less per capita by half on Parks and Recreation than any of the other 7 lower Eastern Shore counties. This is not a recession, it's an afliction of short sightedness of numbnuts like those on this blog. You get what you pay for.

Joe is right. The former Comtek is now the Tri County Council(Government). And look at the Old Salisbury Mall site - Wicomico County bought it for a new parking lot. Look at how many facilities the County is presently renting, Wicomico County Liquor Board(Downtown), WIC(Adkins), Dental Center(Adkins), County Liquor Dispensaries(SuperG & Food Lion). I could go on and on. Sooner or later the system is going to implode - and that day has arrived.

Exactly how many parks do we need? Maybe Mackes should have spent some of his money on parks and not on an expensive fleet of vehicles. I've been told Culver will get rid of Mackes - on that issue alone he has my vote. Pollitt is a wimp about Mackes and his top guy - Wayne - protects Mackes.

8:50, Are you serious? Did you wear a helmet on the bus you rode to school?

Let's take Delmar as an example.

They are always in a surplus year after year. Their ball parks are in great condition and the community comes together to care for them because they RESPECT what they have.

You Liberals EXPECT to be taken care of and have forgotten where you came from.

Not a recession, (you say). Are you kidding me! The entire country has been in a recession. The difference being is, most other communities saw it coming and prepared. Wicomico County created underhanded raises and even questionable tactics by bringing back rejected raises after two votes and brought them back to the table again and passed them because so many members are leaving.

I'll agree with you on the you get what you pay for. However, I'd say it's more like you get what you VOTED for.

We still don't have a dream team city council. The Salisbury city council is worthless. Painting a few buildings a few bars and ballet is not reviving Salisbury. You can put lipstick on a pig but it is still a pag

To 8:50 AM Posting - It is obvious you work for the Parks & Recreation. However, as you have called us others in your posting,
'Numbnuts' the majority of us are on the other side of the table and take objection to your reference.

In all Fairness - Maybe Wicomico's taxpayers should just simply assess all of those who are feeding at the public troughs and issue a 'Special Tax' to them only. Only then might you realize my point.

Signed
Wicomico Taxpayer

Joe, let's take it one step further. Our area is so depressed, we're in a depression, not a recession. Company's are leaving as fast as they can.

The problem with the council is with the exception of a couple, they forget who put them in office and why. Look how Prettyman and MHolloway vote and behave....they have become puppets of the Executive office...and Hall, while appointed not elected, is too dumb to figure things out himself so he listens to Prettyman and Wayne for what to do. Prettyman is really the problem as she keeps switching her votes - she is so easily intimidated by the "big boys" and so pathetically wants to be liked by them that she has lost her moral compass - if she ever had one. If she had any integrity, she would resign NOW. However, she loves her so called position too much to do what is right. SICK!

JoeAlbero said...

9:09, the Council is trying, I know that for a fact. However, you are correct. The businesses and jobs are minute and only concentrated on Downtown.

Here's the funny part.

Pollitt and Ireton would have been SMART to hire me to build up the economic development for Wicomico County. In the very least, if I had failed they could have stated everything I said in my run for Mayor was false and not possible.

HOWEVER, they did NOT because they knew I am more then capable and qualified to make it happen and work.

Downtown is EASY, in my opinion. Yet Ireton still isn't getting it in that area. You'll see later this morning, there's more coming Downtown. However, it's another restaurant and quite frankly it will be extremely hard to compete until you bring people by the thousands each weekend to support it. New Years Eve was great, just like a first date. However, living together day in and day out is a different story.

9:02-In regard to math,Delmar's rate of spread is approximately exponential until the net result becomes saturated. At the present rate of growth, that day will come.

left salisbury for the western shore 6 years ago for a better future...never looked back. there is no recession in central maryland. just take a ride and see for yourselves. politics have nothing to do with the lower shore's economy. it's much larger than a local mayor or council can control with policy. when will you all realize that! you either stay and wither away or relocate and prosper. real simple because the salisbury of 2005-2006 is never coming back

Anonymous said...

9:17 - you are so right! She is responsible for some of these re-votes. Council has been hi-jacked by her antics. Can't wait for her to leave and hope election will correct some issues. Culver and Joe H. may have their issues, but I would take them any day of the week over Prettyman, Hall and M. Holloway. Culver for Exec and Joe returning as council prez. I am a fed up registered Dem - not a libertard!!

If the incoming CC were smart they will hire Albero for Wicomico's new Economic Developer. Our local economy has degraded so badly that it is worse than a Depression - it is Catastrophic. There are so many vacant buildings in Wicomico that it even makes Detroit look like its prospering.

Anonymous said...

I to have lived in Salisbury all of my life almost 70 years. The last time I remember almost as many vacant buildings was when Jimmy Carter was President. But today's vacancies exceeds even the days of Jimmy Carter. Let's face it, our economy just isn't functioning. Lord help Wicomico if it wasn't for public welfare.

makes now there's an idiot! way overpaid but won't hire enough staff cause it might take away from his piggy bank! time for this one to go!

Only progress around town is non profit renovations, look at the building next to the old movies on Main St,Zoo,YMCA,BD of Elections wanting to move, middle school it's a progressive liberal recovery!

Drove through Cambridge the other day and was impressed with the amount of new businesses in downtown. Looked like a lot more development there than here.

Anonymous said...

Cambridge downtown is all window dressing. Like putting lipstick on a pig! Like Salisbury, it is full of empty warehouses and abandoned factories. I'm glad they are trying to improve the appearance, but it has the unfortunate location of being next to the worst area of town for crime.

Except for the Hyatt, it really doesn't have much to offer. We need manufacturing and not service or hospitality jobs. It is manufacturing and construction that will save the economy and make the service jobs possible.

Until that returns, they will both become like Detroit.

What none of you bone heads see is the real truth.....you lose many big companies....bypass the town on the two most heavily traveled roads in the state...blame it all on politicians and then point fingers to the current field of circus clowns...just wait six months and if you think it can't get worse your in for a big surprise......wanna see a economy booming look to SWFL!!!! Every other week another company announces plans to relocate...and anytime a bypass is suggested its quickly squashed

Thank you 9:23. Not sure when people here will notice that this area is nothing more than a seasonal trap. If we didnt have tourism this area would be even more depressed. Whats so funny is that all the life long residents hate anything that wasnt born/raised here as if its some sort of utopia. This really couldnt be farther from the truth. The funny part is that how can the from heres tout such a great place when most never have never lived anywhere but here?? Its all smoke and mirrors.

This is 7:15 I spoke about companies relocating.....just a typo as they are coming to florida in droves.....hertz is moving its headquarters here to SWFL bringing neatly 1000 high paying jobs.....the growth here is great. Even the born here's get it......the shore is finished and Isn't coming back.......call me the come here who opened his eyes and ran.....

I've seen the powers that be driving through our community with blinders on (the same thing that horses wore to keep them from looking to the right or left). Now you see, that answers everything;they didn't know about this blight because they didn't see it.

As for Standard Register, they deserve to close because they were warned if they vote in a union the company will look real hard at why they should stay open in Salisbury. Yes the employes voted in a union about 2 years ago and now they know the consequences for that vote. The pay scales ranges from $13.00 to $35.00 with most making over $20.00 per hour. I wish them luck in finding a equally compensating job here on the shore.

Gary Mackes or Ed Urban?

What an idiot to think that wasting money on parks and recreation is what will jump start the economy.

I say cut parks and recs completely out of the County budget and you will see a major stimulation of the economy. The real tax payers will have more money to spend.

WTH is SWFL?? Speak English moron.

Anonymous said...

Not 7:15 but I'm pretty certain that SWFL is the west coast of Florida (Tampa/St. Pete/Ft. Myers/Santibel Il.)

BTW, Santibel Il. was one of the areas first impacted by the RE implosion in 2007 but now has recovered and the racial makeup of the city is 97.99% white and the median income for a family is $92,455. Well above the eastern shore.

Anonymous said...

Hey moron its SOUTH WEST FLORIDA. ...the fastest growing area in the united states unlike the shore......fastest sinking ship.....its called an abbreviation.....

Anonymous said...

7:50
I agree that being in FL is way better than the E. Shore but SWFL is a retirement home. Lauderdale and Miami are much more happening.

Anonymous said...

SWFL is South West Florida. You better learn that. This freak is on this blog ALL the time yammering about his wonderful life in 'SWFL'. I think somebody around here did some serious psychological damage to this guy.

First of i talk about about what's not happening on the the shore.....I talk about what is needed for the shore to survive....you born here's have squashed any chance....I spent nearly twenty years on the shore watching it slowly and sadly die....if you want the shore to have a chance you had better look at and model areas that have jobs and progress......
