(CNSNews.com) -- The teen unemployment rate went up in January to 20.7% -- from 20.2% in December-- and is now more than three times the national unemployment rate of 6.6%, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
The BLS numbers show there were 1,140,000 people ages 16-19 unemployed in December. For January, that number was 1,147,000 -- an increase of 0.6%.
The teen unemployment rate (seasonally adjusted) has been in the 20s range (high and low) since October 2008. It hit a high of 27.3% in October 2010.

Gonna get worse when the minimum wage goes up...If I was a business owner, I would rather pay that higher minimum wage to a post career person trying to stay busy during the day than to a non-proven kid still in high school...subject to growth-spurts and hormone changes.....
I think Annie made this point, that this age group, now the highest in unemployment, typically minimum wage, because those jobs are now going to working families.
Those kids don't want and won't take entry level jobs in OC or at Purdue so foreign workers are brought in that want to work.
exactly 318. I love how suddenly, when there is a political ax to grind, "teen UE" is a big deal. These teens need to be in school (trade school, university, or still in HS) learning advanced skills, not lining up a mickie D's to compete with folks who failed to do so when they were that age.
I ride my bike all day and party all night...wooooooooo-wooooooooo
NOt a problem. They like it this way!
4:42, so I guess I'm the only one who went to school AND worked a MW job evenings and weekends as a teen?
Boy, was I the stupid one!
