Mikulski: Deal Allows 1 Percent Raise For Federal Workers

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski, chairwoman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, said Wednesday that the deal approved by Congress to reopen the federal government would also allow President Barack Obama to go forward with his plan to offer a 1 percent pay raise to federal employees.

Federal employee pay has been frozen for three years. The Obama administration has attempted to offer small raises before, but the effort failed to capture support in Congress. In a joint statement, Mikulski and Sen. Ben Cardin said the agreement would allow the raises to take effect in January.

The legislation also provides retroactive pay for federal workers, which Cardin had pressed for in the Senate.

"The promise of a modest pay raise and back pay for furloughed government employees are good first steps in recognizing the value of federal workers," Mikulski, a Maryland Democrat said in a statement. "They have been the targets of unending attacks. They've been furloughed, laid off and locked out through no fault of their own."

We can't pay our bills now without raising the debt limit so they throw raises at federal employees. I don't think these morons even passed general math #1. They just got a bonus for taking the last two weeks off.

That is literally pennies on a dollar. That's how much they value you.

So it was a paid vacation for the government employees! I hate this government, especially that lady!

she's no lady 10:01, she's a wretched little toad who calls tea party members "tea baggers". i'm sure she's familiar with that term because she tea bags the kenyan every morning.

Of course by shutting down the government, the Republicans gave all federal employees a two week paid vacation, equivalent to a 3.6% raise.

Who is spending the money?

Again, being rewarded for not doing anything to better the world.

Yeah 1150. Those guys at NASA, NIH, NSF, USFW, NPS and more all just sit around not contributing anything.

it is simply amazing, everyone is screaming that ted cruz and the republicans "shut down the government" step back and think about what happened yesterday, the federal government borrowed another trillion dollars, kicked the can down the road for another 90 days gave themselves a raise and we have these democrats out there patting themselves on the back. has anyone noticed what is happening with this "great" health care plan??? this is absolute insanity

Most of the ones that I have seen don't deserve the raise...or the free two-week vacation they just got.

They should be happy they have their gimme jobs!

Not to mention the number of Federal workers who've applied for unemployment. They better have to pay that back if they're getting back pay.

Notice the implication of the background. "It's for the children..."
