Study: More Americans On Disability Than Live In NYC

A new study says more Americans received Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits in 2012 than the entire population of New York City.

Our Generation, a free market non-profit advocacy group, says in its “Drivers of SSDI Growth” report that a record 8,733,461 Americans now receive disability benefits. According to U.S. Census data, the population of New York City is 8,336,697.

“Despite its humble beginnings as an insurance plan for long-tenured workers with the misfortune of becoming disabled before retirement, SSDI has ballooned into a $135 billion behemoth threatening to collapse under its own weight, and to take a bite out of Medicare on the way down,” said Our Generation Executive Director MacMillin Slobodien.

The group says it plans to mount an aggressive public relations campaign to educate taxpayers on the explosive growth in the disability program.

This is the only way Obama has been able from keeping the unemployment level from running out of sight!

Open the floodgates on disability.

The abuse of this program is rampant.Visit the check cashing place in Salisbury on the first-there are ENTIRE families where each member gets a SSDI check for something vague. Most of the people on SSDI under 50 are drug addicts and drunks.Meanwhile people with heart disease and other life threatening ailments get denied benefits.

How about night work said...

My Nephew ( who is white by the way) is turning 30 soon...He gets a SSDI check b/c his Doctor said he cannot wake up early for work...

That statistic is meaningless! Anyone who voluntarily lives in New York City is mentally disabled anyway so that really skews the numbers.

I see my ex co workers loping around grocery stores, afraid to act like they feel great.Their Md St pension was much less than they could get on disability.Once the medical establishment OK'd them they were good to go.Most of them clean condos in OC for cash, which is bust ass work. There are way too many on disability for the government to monitor.
