Ocean City Has Lost Its Mind!

I know this isn't breaking news but these people can't be serious, right? I know, I must have missed it, (being in the news business and all) the greatest recession/depression is now over. Property values have now tripled and every middle class and lower class person is now off food stamps, off welfare, off unemployment, gas has come back around to $1.00 a gallon. Banks are returning previous owners to their foreclosed homes and the confidence in President Obama is through the roof. BS! I can't wait to get pictures of that mostly empty parking lot on the day of this event.

And you wonder why those in elected positions aren't in the private sector, because people like me were never stupid enough to hire them. $50 Flat Fee Parking All Day in Inlet Lot on July 4th

Posted: 24 Jun 2013 06:04 AM PDT
The Town of Ocean City is making a change to parking operations in the Inlet Parking Lot on Thursday, July 4, by charging a $50 flat-fee for all day parking. The fee, which is good for one-entry, will allow visitors to come as early as 5 a.m. and stay as late as midnight, without being charged an hourly parking rate.

“We hope the new flat fee parking will allow our visitors to be more flexible during their trip to Ocean City on July 4th,” said John VanFossen, Deputy Director of Public Works. “We think this will not only allow visitors the opportunity to come to Ocean City early and stay late, but it will also smooth the amount of traffic exiting the downtown area after the fireworks.”

Visitors who utilize the flat-free option will be issued a window pass and directed to park by assisting parking attendants. If the lot fills, visitors will be encouraged to use neighboring parking lots, including Worcester Street, Somerset Street, Dorchester Street, North Division Street, 4th Street and the West Ocean City Park & Ride.

The normal “ticketed” parking operations will return at midnight on July 5. For questions about parking in the Inlet Lot on July 4th or for more information, please contact Communications Manager, Jessica Waters at 410-289-8967.

Keep it up Ocean City. Like O'Malley you will force people to do other things because of high taxes.

Well, they DID get one sentence correct in their shoot yourself in the foot idea; there will be no traffic gridlock mad rush after the fireworks show, because there won't be any cars there to leave the parking lot! LOL!

people will pay it, not locals, but tourists.

I'm going! Just so I can observe and take pictures and when the gridlock on Baltimore Ave and Philadelphia Ave is like no one's ever seen before and fire, police and EMS can't move when they get a call I'm going to post here and say--- "WE TOLD YOU SO-YOU DOPES!

Bah, I will be watching from my boat only accessible spot.

You just gotta hang out for a bit afterwards so you don't get hit by all the drunks flying back home in cigarette boats.

You and about a million others 4:41.

Whats the big deal? If you are local you already know where to park without paying those prices and if you're not, well, looks like you're shelling out 50$ which for all day is not a bad deal f you ask me.

Talk about taking advantage of people this is awful!

Ocean City touts itself as family friendly, how many families can afford this robbery in this economy.

The Council there is just as foolish as the Salisbury Councils.

What's wrong with the city providing extra buses?

make it a 100... plezzz

This is gonna be classic. Can't wait to see the gridlock from u turns. Traffic will be absolute madness on 50, Baltimore ave, Philadelphia ave, and St. Louis .

Willards is 12? miles away and free and a GREAT show. That's $4 in fuel for the round trip. See you there!

Just parked at OC Inlet yesterday---pretty sure it said the Maximum Fee was $72---looks like the online info & the sign at the Inlet don't match up.

The lot will be full, because they will have real jobs that pay real money. Not the chump change we make that live here!

Anonymous said...

Given their expenses, I don't see the fee as unreasonable.

Parking meters are nothing but a money grab from greedy politicians as well as double taxation!
They should all be torn down.
Citizen's pay taxes specifically to build and maintain streets and roads for them to use.
Where is the money going?

The Hispanic farm hands who invade the inlet lot on the 4th will pay it. They sleep in their vehicles and under the pier all day. It is cheaper then a hotel room. Maybe the fee will help to pay for the mess they will leave.

Every year there is grid lock in the south end on the 4th. How will this be any different?

Has anyone thinking this is bad every paid to park 24hrs in a real city. MUCH more

Amigo,

Are you crazy, $50 is a bargain for a weekend to swim, sleep in your car, hound the boardwalk all night (skateboards optional), and drink 24/7 and not worry about getting in your car! Captain rick, can we also get trimpers, thrashers, and fishers for an exta $10?

ocean city a family resort.....? not hardly! ocean city is nothing more than a two bit waste of a tourist town. Its dirty, unkept, looks tired and worn out. just look at the ferris wheel at night....how many lghts actualy work? They have ripped off the tourists and they are going other places. Even the dew tour now in only its third year is losing. The greed there is slowly killing it. This entire area is dying a slow and painful death. the loss of jobs, people leaving, crime going up. Even the come heres.....you all know the people you born heres love to hate..the ones who brought the money to this area are leaving for better places. The way things are going you born heres wont be able to live here either. Good luck to you all count me as a come here who has seen enough....even the kids here cant find a decent paying job.....

I consider this gouging. It's setting a pattern for every holiday or event that's celebrated at the Beach. Just watch!!

Bring along 4 friends and everyone pays 10 bucks. Seems like a deal to me.

2 things: First, people will pay it. Free Market principles applied, they charge what the market will bear. They could probably charge $100 and people would pay.

Second, I don't know why anyone would want to be in that mess on the 4th of July. My first year living on the shore my family went down a few hours before the fireworks to see them. After driving around for an hour and a half to FIND parking, we settled for parking in someones yard for $30 only a few hours and had to walk 40+ streets up to 14th street to set up shop to see the fireworks... not to mention the NIGHTMARE of getting OUT of Ocean City. Compared to that, $50 seems reasonable.

as long as it doesn't rain. and cancel the fireworks. or someone with you, or yourself get sick, or hurt.
your trapped. anyone that does this is a fool.
hope they have a good area for all the people doing u-turns.

I feel sorry for the person who is going to be telling people at the lot about this. They are going to get earfuls of cuss filled rants from irritated people. I think it's a bad idea to put employees in this predicament.
