Taxpayer-Backed Free Lunch Program Feeds Controversy in California

Every summer across the U.S., more than 3 million children eat for free at more than 30,000 sites, from schools to recreation centers to migrant worker camps. It's a valuable resource for families who are struggling, and, critics say, a nice freebie for those who aren't.

The "Summer Fun Cafe" in Northern California and others like it are funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, in areas where at least half the children qualify for free lunches during the regular school year.

But come summer, anyone 18 and under can pull up a chair to Uncle Sam's table.

And somehow they can't grasp the concept as to why the state is going bankrupt?! "We're giving away money as fast as we can, why isn't there enough to pay the bills?"

WOW.

We have become a welfare nation. Where is the pride for working for a living and supporting yourself? With social services on the rise every time you turn around; why should anyone work when they give you food stamps, medical care for yourself and kids, paying heating/air conditioning bills that are behind, taxi/bus fare, pay for having your hair/nails done so you can look "professional" if you go looking for a job, help paying rent, or finding a place to stay, kids camps, air tickets/motel fare for visitations, on an on it goes. To save the nation and the honest taxpayer some money cut out welfare.
