Seriously?

Joe,

This is the second time in two hours we have the ladder truck at the corner of Snow Hill and Johnson Rd. This time it is the Holly Center.

That's the Fire Dept. showing they need that million dollar grant money. What a waste!
So when they wear out the ladder truck they will need another million for a new fire truck. Is that the only vehicle they have with air condition?
Joe! Hope you can do something there when you become Mayor!

Isn't that the area they have been advertising for a week now would be single lane?

Tell Me if I am wrong..but that is county
Not city

Really people?? Take a look at the picture, emergency lights are activated. There is also a command vehicle. I would say they were actually on a call, not joy ridding as some of you are assuming! Judging by the signs yes it is in the county and Truck 1 is stationed at Station 1 plus this is Station 1's first due. I'm sure I will be called a stupid fireman next....

Anon: Agreed 100%

So what's the complaint?

The grant was good for two years on the 12 positions. Then the city would have to eat the 12 spots. Compared to a major city you have it made. The number of calls for service is a joke. Get real guys. The boat, the big house on cypress street whats next. The cops are driving cars that the wheels are falling off. Maybe it is time to take care your police dept. I live in the county and do not work for SPD. So dont even try to go there. Ray Charles can see what is going on here.

For all of you people who complain about the fire department, this is my advise to you. If you or your family are ever in an accident or your house is on fire, handle it yourself. Don't call them, since you seem to know it all, do it yourself. See how that works out for you!!!! Seriously people, don't be stupid!

A ladder truck to answer a call? And you have to ask what's the problem? Nothing smaller more cost effective laying around the station? Not to mention the slower responce time with a big truck!
Oh! you mention something in your last sentence?

Good grief people, get a life! Until you KNOW what it going on and what you are talking about then maybe you shouldn't speak (or text for that matter). Depending on the call a fire truck as well as an ambulance will go out on the call and depending on how its dispatched (and who called it in), there is usually limited info on what the call truly is....and the goes for EVERY station in the county, not just Salisbury. And for as far as its county not city.....what does the matter?!?! The fire dept doesn't respond the same as police so as long as the call is in their territory then they are reaponding even if it is "county". Also, I do believe that Salisbury alternates the trucks out on a daily basis as far as which truck goes on calls that way they DON'T run down the apparatus. And.....as far as service calls.....would you like the fd to start saying no to calls?!?! Oh wait, I'm sure you would because then you could complain about how the fd won't respond. Grow up and learn some facts, or better yet go get a job and be productive.

Why do I need a firetruck at a non burning car wreak?

Someone on a scooter was actually hit by the yellow ford I believe when I went by yesterday. If the person was seriously injured they don't people rubbernecking causing more accidents!

I was not certain I was the only person who has noticed the fire department riding around (seemingly with no real purpose) with lights flashing. The other day I followed one (16?) across town until it stopped at the end of the street next to Giant Foods. I was not going out of my way to follow it because I was running on time for an appointment but just seemed to be going the same route. It seems as if joy riding occurs on a regular basis but they are probably on official business that require all the lights flashing while driving normally.

I do have a job thank you. Of course I don't have the extra cash to waste as you or your dept. I work for mine. (sorry)!
But to spend over a million dollars for 12 fire persons to maybe shave off a second or two is not cost effective no matter how much you'd like it.

It seems the community has hit a raw nerve doesn't it? SFD, listen up, no citizen is saying you and your dept. is unimportant, or not needed, but if you personally were footing the bill, wouldn't you be looking at the big picture and eliminating waste at all cost? Perhaps, the SOP for the dispatchers should be revised to get more exacting information from the caller inorder to send the best possible choice of vehicles to the emergency. I'm sure, if everyone tried, they could come up with the best possible answer and outcome for the community. The city needs the best out of our police and fire depts. we don't to pit one against the other that sounds like shades of the game the mayor plays. Everybody just needs to admit there is waste and abuse and clean up your acts and move forward with your dignity it tact. Thank you for all you do

SFD does not have a "rescue squad" The ladder truck is the departments "rescue squad" which carries the hurst tool and other rescue specific tools. Thats why it responds to calls with the possibility of forced rescue. If you'd like the City could buy a rescue squad with the equipment for about $300k. But then people would complain about that too.

Anonymous said...

If that is the case 12:15 Maybe.....just maybe they should be buying equipment that they USE instead of equipment that they want to use as a toy. They could have bought 3 rescue squads for the price of one boat.

If the SFD can't get their act together and stop the high handed childish ways, it very well be time to start the search for an all new department top/down. Obviously, there are serious problems with the dept. that need to be dealt with immediately. I believe the dept. head is stiring up the troops to align in his favor and it is causing the community a great deal of heartache and grief. He needs to be replaced and a new search started. Can the council take care of this?

8:38, to answer your question, no there is not something smaller more cost efficient laying around the station. The other option is an Engine, which costs close in comparison to a Truck. Sure I guess they could take the utility "pick up" but god help the patient if they are pinned or the vehicle is on fire. Next you'll say "This was a scooter". Speaking from experience there are numerous times the dispatch center is wrong and the emergency is much worse than expected. Like some others are saying, try to be educated before you make a statement. We all know what assuming does.

Anonymous said...

Perhaps the Dispatch Center needs improved training and revised SOP's.

1025 - I do not work for SFD nor do I live in Salisbury....I work hard for my money and do not waste it, I also pay taxes just like you, but I'm not complaining about what/how SFD uses equipment.
