Financial Literacy

The state of Maryland now requires that school districts provide opportunities for instruction that will help students achieve personal financial literacy. The requirement involves the elementary, middle and high school levels.

The state has not prescribed a standardized pathway for making these opportunities available, only that they exist and meet certain goals. Here in Frederick County, the Board of Education is addressing the mandate by creating a graduation requirement for all high school students.

According to a recent Gazette story, high school students can meet this requirement in several different ways -- a good idea that provides flexibility for students on various graduation and career paths.

good idea! considering most will prolly need to know how to use an
(in)depsndence card since maryland doesn't bother creating any jobs, would be a good thing to teach kids about those things, I know I always was amazed listening to my grandparents telling me about how things used to be!

It's about time! Teaching something that is one of the most important subjects to master - go figure.
