Should Fast Food Restaurants Be Allowed to Accept Food Stamps?

Only three states — Arizona, Michigan, and California — currently allow fast food restaurants to take payments from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (better known as "food stamps"), but Yum! Brands, parent company of KFC and Taco Bell, is currently leading a push in its home state of Kentucky to open that option up to state residents there.

Joining the fast food giant in lobbying for this change is the Coalition for the Homeless, which believes that, for people who don't live near a grocery store and can't afford a restaurant, "This would allow people to get a reduced price meal at a small deli or a restaurant, and that does include fast-food restaurants."

Those opposed to the change believe that the government should not subsidize the consuming of fast food. They argue that, by allowing SNAP recipients to purchase fast food, the government will only be spending more on these people later in life when their health fails.

Sadly, this was only a matter of time.

Geez the seafood places already do. I love watching somebody buy lobster on State funds but it happens all of the time.

No, they need to take the food stamps to the grocery store where they can purchase more and feed their children healthier foods!

This is the epitmy of America's problem. The quick fix. Oh no food tonight lets go run through the drive through with our food stamps and get a happy meal which I most likely did not work for. How far will this country really slip? It seems to be getting worse as each week goes by...

The purpose of food stamps or any other social help program should be to guide and help folks that are down on their luck or just plain disabled to steer themselves on a healthy, work- towards- self improvement of their present situation. requiring recipients to buy whole foods and cooking it themselves works toward this. Letting them go out to dinner and paying someone else to cook for them does not.

So, no.

NO! Im sick and tired of watching lazy people fill their carts up with junk food and sodas on MY DIME! Should be a list of foods that CAN NOT be purchased with food stamps. KFC will will rise in sales if they do that. I bet you!

No. I think that Food Stamps are a vital part of many families budget but they should not be a permanant solution. I agree that there should be approved foods (which should not include bushels of crabs lol). They do say that a healthy diet is an integral part of a healthy lifestyle. Just out of curiousity what do you guys think about having food stamps be accepted at produce markets?
