Children to Undergo Rabies Shots After Dog Attack

CLINTON, MD. - The children bitten and scratched in a dog attack at a school bus stop last week will have to get shots to prevent rabies.

Prince George's County Health Officer Dr. Donald Shell explains that "the attempt by the state to get samples from the brain of the animal were insufficient, so therefore there's a need to protect the children and for them to receive a rabies vaccination."

Dr. Shell says the treatment to prevent rabies is based on a course of vaccinations.

He adds that there is one piece of good news: these shots aren't administered to the abdomen.

Dr. Shell says the new shots aren't as bad. "They're not the typical shots in the stomach that people are afraid of. They're just like getting immunizations," he says.
