Did The Local Media Drop The Ball On Whitney Bennett?

Let me start off by saying this. Sources are now telling Salisbury News that the Whitney Bennett case is now being considered a homicide. We have not received confirmation that this is in fact the case but many have questioned why Salisbury News and the local MSM dropped the ball on this case.

First let me say that we did publish an article dated December 23rd 2010 HERE.

However, Salisbury News AND the MSM were told by Sheriff Lewis they did NOT believe there was ANY foul play in this case, therefore we published it as a Missing Person Report, standard protocol.

When the Family requested it to be published again, based on what we were informed, we were lead to believe she had just taken off. Now, did we drop the ball, absolutely. However, clearly, there was nothing we could have done anyway.

Hopefully additional details will come forth in the very near future and we can provide more details. Let me say this though. Are we becoming a society in which we are to pamper the true details of what took place, or do we tell the TRUTH. Cases like these are VERY difficult to decide. No matter what is said and done, like I said earlier, this is the Mother of three children who is no longer with us/them.

May she rest in peace.

I hope people will learn to start caring about other people period!
Unfortunately this tragedy could happen to any family rich or poor.
When is Salisbury going to wake up to the fact we have drugs, gangs, sexual predators that also live here. Stand up and be heard and dont stop till the people in charge listen. If you dont like what you see be that change. Let's all pray together we get whomever did this so she can THEN rest in peace. If you know something make that call.

I saw a billboard about her out on Rt 50 I think near Williards. Since she was on the billboard I thought she must be endangered-not sure that's the word- I figured she was more than missing to warrant a billboard.

hey 314 first of all this had nothing to do with salisbury and in case you havent paid attention two people are under arrest. you can pray all you want but my guess is criminals dont. its unfortunate that this young woman had to die.If your going to comment at least know alittle before you do.

Why are you ragging on 3:14, 3:36? That comment made some good points. I don't believe anyone is under arrest for the murder either.

and if you are going to comment 3:36 at least know alittle before you do that one of jerks arrested is already out on bail!

People please. The one thing not said here is she didn't bury herself. Now was she dead because of an accident (i.e. overdose) and it was being covered up or was she murdered?

Very sad. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends. I will pray every night that God help this family through this trying time. She looked like a awsome girl and it's enough to make someone lose thier religion but hang on family. Time will ease your pain and you can always close your eyes and reflect on her golden memories. In your thoughts she will always "stay gold" .

Hats off to her parents, regardless of what choices she may or may not have been making they Knew that she wouldn't have "just taken off" and wouldn't accept that. But in fairness the law requires an adult to be "missing" for a min of 24hrs before they can even take a report. Even than unless they have something to work with to point them in the direction of a crime there is very little they can do but keep an open mind with ears and eyes open because sadly people disappear for personal reasons everyday. Not knowing for sure is in many ways as hard if not harder than even knowing the worse. May this family get the answers they still so badly need so that the can begin the healing process.

4:52 has it right, in my opinion. No one really dropped the ball. The media should not report it as a homicide until law enforcement officially declares it so.

It was possible she died and whoever was with her panicked and buried her, but it was not their fault. OR they could have killed her accidentally, panicked and buried her, in which case it's manslaughter, not homicide. OR she could have been murdered.

It's always best to wait until the law agency makes it declaration rather than speculate. Enough facts were there to know this poor young lady ended up dead.

To her family, my family's condolences. I cannot imagine your pain, but we will pray for comfort and strength to come to you as you deal with this terrible, terrible tragedy. Please know there are strangers out here who would give you a hug if we could.

The same people who are accusing you of making money from providing coverage of the Sarah Foxwell murder, will now fault you for not providing coverage in this case.

Joe, it sounds like you are damned if you do and damned if you don't.

the problem here isnt joe, when he does post something that is related to a case re foxwell people who know nothing about it blog like they were standing there when it happened. like some of the bloggers on here now READ AND LEARN the acutual released facts. Maybe the police will hopefully keep all cases like this very quiet to keep the no brain idiots from posting useless information about something they know nothing about. it is tragic this woman died and unfortunately it appears she mad some bad choices in life and we need to show our young people that bad choices usually bring about bad situations.
