Congratulations … It’s Time To Lead

Congratulations to Terry Cohen, Laura Mitchell, and Tim Spies for their election (re-election in the case of Cohen) to the Salisbury City Council.  We at SbyNEWS wish them great success over the next four years.

While there are still absentee ballots to be counted, the 210 ballots issued are highly unlikely to affect three winners.  Only the placing and margins are likely to change.  As Councilwoman Cohen stated yesterday:

“It’s time to get back to work for the people of Salisbury.”

… and there is a lot of work to be done!

After over six years of persistence and hard work, dusk is falling on the last vestiges of the Barrie Comegys approach to city governance.  Voters in Salisbury’s beleaguered neighborhoods have something to be excited about.  However, those same voters are expecting change.

While Mayor Jim Ireton can be proud that crime has declined under his administration, the city’s crime rate is still high.  Neighborhood blight is still a concern.  Economic development is a major issue.  The list goes on … and on.

Over the years Councilwoman Debbie Campbell, along with Cohen and Spies have put forward many ideas that can help move Salisbury forward.  We expect that Mitchell will do the same.  However, ideas are worth only so much if you are a member of a majority coalition.  These ideas will need to be put into action if these council members expect to maintain the trust of the voters who have elected them.

We expect this council to come through and translate ideas into action.  We hope that we are proven right.

Correction:

The Comegys-Barrie nightmare began in Nov. 2003 -- that's when the "Dream Team" (Dunn, Comegys and Cathcart) assembled by Phil Tilghman and Ron Alessi were elected -- so it's been almost 8 years long.

And since Barrie's reign of terror began in 1998, we have actually suffered for more than 12 years now.

Years of nightmares like the old mall, got an empty lot for $14,000,000. Pipeline annexations to a brand new $80,000,000 WWTP that needs another $60 - $80,000,000 in upgrades to get it to work properly? Then we have an even bigger problem, we haven't talked about crime yet.

You are correct. However, I was using the time before Debbie Campbell's first run as the start of "hard work".

UNLESS you have another Smith in Mitchell, hopefully she will not get elected to be the council president. JTM SHANNIE HAS PROBLEMS NOW. Hell he might kick her outta his rental.

I am really excited about what the next couple of years could bring with these folks. I live in the county and couldn't vote, but I have had encounters with Terry Cohen over the years and she's just like the voter said in the paper - "down-to-earth and honest." She is smart and caring, too.

The other two candidates sound like intelligent and well-adjusted people. For years, I just couldn't believe what I watched on PAC14, the abuse Cohen and Campbell took from those other people.

The new council has a lot of damage to repair so I hope people will be patient. But I feel like a huge dark cloud has been lifted from Salisbury.

In fact, doesn't the weather seem like the perfect comparison? Yesterday, election day, was stormy and uncertain. Today, the sun is shining brightly on Salisbury.

Works for me!

IMO, Shanie Shields will find the people she has been cruel to will not respond in kind.

I'm guessing we will either see a new Shanie or not see much of Shanie as she does an even barer minimum to collect her check.

I hope she will respond well. It would be nice to see people doing the right thing for a change.

Congrats to Cohen, Spies and Mitchell. I think we will now see real leadership. I hope they make Campbell or Cohen president. They have endured a lot from the council bullies with dignity. Both are recognized leaders.

Now it's time for a clean sweep of department heads. Audit the spending in each department and boot the ones that subscribe to wasteful spending, especially the ones trying to spend every last dollar of their budget in the next few months.

Don't forget John Barkovich was part of that Klan choosing the Dream Team!!

Now all they need to do is get a new Mayor and kick out Lori Chambers and the City may actually have a chance.
