OC Mayor

By now I guess you have heard about OC Mayor Rick Meehan's veto of Ocean City's austerity program.
This is exactly why I have been warning people to stay clear of Ocean City.  The resort's property owners have now been taken out of the equation.
Not only do the secondary residents not have a voice as they can't vote  - but they are being held hostage to a corrupted poltical system in that the government workers are now holding them as ransom for their pristine working conditions.

For years, I have tried to tell people to stay clear of Ocean City.  You are now seeing my reasoning - first hand.
Meehan has lost touch with reality.

See today's Daily Times article HERE.

as for the voting. sure people can vote there. all they have to do is use it as thier PRIMARY RESIDENCE. you can only vote once, unless your a democrat of course

Meehan vetoed the laws not because he necessarily disagreed with them but because the new council majority clique pushed them through without any discussion with the rest of the council or the public. Meehan has asked that they bring the laws back to the table but this time have some discussion about them. The new council majority in Ocean City conducts meetings amongst themselves (against the rules of the sunshine laws of maryland) and then pushes them through immediately.

it is crazyness. but i think he did the right thing. they have been in office for 3 meeting and makeing deals behind closed doors, they need to take a step back.

No, the truth is the Mayor has been used to running the town! He, the past Council President, and Dennis made the decisions that down the road, would break the town. So, now he vetos, no big deal, still can't hire anyone, because that must come from the Council. Best thing they can do is start by firing Dennis.

OC Government has a character of its own. There's been a recent story describing the Town's efforts to increase revenue from the Inlet parking lot which I recall brings in $2.5M each year. To collect the fees, they employee a small number of retirees for the Summer. It is the Council's belief that these retirees are COSTING the Town $250K/yr. Some would say that, by spending $250K for these employees, they take in $2.5M but the Council is dead set on spending money on gadgetry to eliminate those part time employees.

To 10:30 Posting

I beg your pardon - I am a OC property owner - (Montego Bay)- and I cannot vote. I am not a full time OC residence.
I have already been informed that in order to vote and also to peg my property tax rates at the 5% assessment cap that I have to verify my residency by producing a copy of my state income tax return, and voter registration card.

If only I had read this article before I purchased in OC it would have saved me a lot of grief. In the current market environment I cannot give my property away. It is a burden to say the least.

This has been the status qou for decades in OC. They lose between 5 & 10 grand minimum out of their money room a season and only 1 Administrator trys to correct this problem and gets slammed by everyone above him. Just think we now have one of them in Annapolis supposedly representing our interest,Jim Mathias. We now have no representation on this end of the Eastern Shore. Voters can only blame themselves for being misrepresented in Annapolis. Sort of reminds me of the Mob arrest just happen in NY and NJ.

It is never easy to stand up to freemasonic councils in small towns. Way to go Mayor!

You people are crazy. "Freemasonic councils"? Would you care to enlighten us as to who on the council is a Mason? Furthermore, how is the Mayor's decision to veto the hasty decisions of a green council majority in any way similar to the FBI arresting members of organized crime?

As for the issue of being able to vote... you want to vote, move here full time. Quite frankly, nobody cares what out of town property owners have to say, anyway. All they care about is paying the lowest possible tax on their vacation property.

your a property owner, but not a residence. whatever your LEGAL residence is is where you vote.
if you file taxes as a montgomery county residence, of course you cant vote in oc. if you filed as an oc resident you wouldnt be able to vote in montgomery county.

its real simple to understand.
it keeps people from voting twice in elections.
please go to the locla community college and take a civics course
