WASHINGTON — Barack Obama laid on a pomp-filled ceremony for his Chinese counterpart Hu Jintao at the White House Wednesday, saying the United States welcomed his country's rise to "a strong, prosperous and successful member of the community of nations."
The president said each country had an "enormous stake" in the success of the other, but added that nations are more successful when the "universal rights of every human being" are upheld.
China's human right's policies have caused strains between the rival powers, with the U.S. calling on China to release jailed dissidents, including Nobel Peace Prize winner Liu Xiaobo, who was prevented from attending the Dec. 10 prize ceremony in the Norwegian capital.
In his remarks, Hu, 67, said the U.S. and China should "seize the opportunity to forge ahead, hand in hand, and work together" for the sake of "lasting peace" and prosperity. He called for "mutual respect" of differences.
Both leaders have vowed stronger cooperation between the world's two largest economies in an effort to bridge the strains of the past year over human rights, Taiwan, Tibet and the gaping U.S. trade deficit with China.

Welcome Comrads.
A communist dictator. The head minister of military(?) said in five years there will be no country on earth that we could not defeat. This is scary stuff. Hu is out of power in 2012.
I, for one, welcome our Chinese overlords!
Seriously, America is operating so poorly now that we can't expect other countries to sit on their hands and wait for us to figure out how to function as a united country. We can't be the leader forever.
4:35 4:40 I thought it was the left that libeled their opponents.
522-Look at your dear leaders' history. It's not libel, it's a fact.
i am goona make up a tee shirt that says! "i am tired of buying and borrowing chinese!
This is the land of milk and honey we need to stop spending on other countries and drill our own oil we need nothing from anyone.
Waiting to see the details of the new trade deal Obama signed. Unfortunately the right will lampoon the man even if the details show the deal to be a good win for the US.
As far as China's rise; the only way to get jobs going in a sustainable fashion this time (forget the boom and bust) are going to be to increase our exports to booming markets like China and cease putting the onus on the American consumer to carry the economy.
8:04....you are right about increasing our exports. This is exactly why we are bent over a barrel. We have become dependent on exports yet have been importing disproportionately. If other countries stop buying U.S. products completely, we are screwed. We are therefore dependent on other countries. Not a good place to be strategically.
6:28 You better stay out of Walmart.
