AFSCME Taking Hostages

Joe-

This has apparently gone out to ALL Maryland State employees (union members or not), along with a ballot and envelopes to mail them to an 'arbitrator' who is conducting the balloting.

It is noteworthy that if this contract is approved, ALL employees will have to pay union dues and abide by the contract, according to the mailing.

It starts out with a $750 bonus for each state employee, elimination of furlough days, etc., and speaks of raises in the next few years.

Stunning.

But if they have to pay union dues, it will probably eat up any raise they might get (if they actually GET a raise-- read the fine print..)

The union says they're putting the squeeze on the gummint.  They're not-- they're putting it on you and me, and the state employees.

Imagine all those new due$-paying member$..

lmao between the state employees union members and the teachers union members there wont be any money left to provide actual services to the people of this state!

The union can go blow

Bingo, 12:01. Exactly right.
And ain't it interesting how they dangle that $750 bonus out there-- just vote 'yes' and it's yours.
This kind of thing will FORCE O'Malley to reduce staffing.
Vote 'yes' and you may find yourself on the street.
People need to stop being greedy and remember that their salaries and benefits are being paid in part by old people who can barely afford to stay in their homes.
The only people who will come out ahead if this is adopted is the union.

Actually, the payment of union dues by all state employees that are considered to be covered by each respective union, was signed into law in the good ole state of md

You are dead wrong , I don't think you are aware that the state doesn't have any money left "NOW"
for anything.

This is nothing new MCEA, a State association called UNion, had this for all County Employees years ago. Afscme has been trying to get this since the first collective bargaining in 1994. It has always been rejected by the State. As for as paying the cost, it is the responsibility of the Union / Association to represent all State Emplotees whether they are a member of theirs or not. That was one of the faults of getting to represent State workers in Collective Bargaining. Who benefits from this is the Unions. AFSCME / Unions have automatic dues increases is never revealed. Their dues will take all raises they have listed to implement and leave the worker with a smaller take home check. This is an example on how people want to be led and not investigate the facts. No I am not pro - Union, because I disagree with Union Bosses getting rich and manipulating their words to shadow the truth while taking advantage of their members. Yes I am an ex - Union member. Yes I have been in Union positions and know what I am talking about. O'Malley is agreeing to this Union take over of the workforce, since O'Malley or his designee that has the authority has to sign it. Backdoor to Union cardcheck that was rejected by the Congress of the US.

These people should be happy to be EMPLOYED! A lot of others don't have that luxury.

How wrong is it to have State Employee Unions? They are payed by the taxes of Maryland Residents who elect officials who represent them in the state and local governments who set the budgets which determines salaries and salary cuts. So essentially, this union is taking away the voice of the common Maryland Taxpayer. Perhaps if half of these State Employees did their job adequately and fulfilled a REAL job desciption then I could reason with this "contract" a little more. Demanding a "Bonus"???? You don't demand a bonus, YOU EARN A BONUS! I hope the signers don't get what they want, go on strike and lose their jobs. Maybe then they will realize how good they had it to begin with!

And just when you though the Maryland State Teachers' union was too strong, it just got stronger!

Fire every dam one of them !!!

Unions are jokes! Their day has come and gone. Now they are just a third party parasite that feeds on people with promises they can't keep. Where are all the good paying union jobs that used to be in Salisbury? GONE! They are all "used to be". They all went south or out of business. What is happening to the big union shops? Ford, Steel, Textiles? UNIONS need to GO!!!!!!

That's the unions putting a gun to the heads of the taxpayers and pulling the trigger. We don't work for them, they work for the taxpayers. Being a state employee shouldn't legalize robbery!

Unions are pathetic. Nothing more than organized crime. AFSCME is a prime example, and their pushy demands are getting old. The rest of the country is waiting out the GOVERNMENT IMPOSED recession while government workers continue to place themselves ahead of the communities they serve. When will the groups responsible for our financial crisis be held accountable? When we stop kowtowing to the organized groups of GED recipients who are driving our local governments into the poor house. Just my 2 cents, of course.

Now for what has actually happened.

For the last three years, State employees took a 2% pay reduction. They also had to take additional pay cuts through furlough days. They didn't get any cost of living increases and they didn't get the upgrades they were supposed to get. The workforce was also reduced. This saved the State and the taxpayers quite a bit of money even though services to the taxpayers weren't reduced.

During this three year period the State of Maryland spent over 120 million dollars to by nontidal wetlands so "they wouldn't be developed". Guess what - you can't develop wetlands without a permit issued by the State and the Corps of Engineers. So this money was wasted. Obviously there were quite a few other things that State spent money on that it didn't need to.

As for the union, while Maryland does have a collective bargaining agreement, it doesn't have binding arbitration and employees aren't allowed to strike. Because of this, the union doesn't have any hammer and is only given through negotiations what the State wants to give them.

State employees are not wasting the taxpayer’s money; they are doing the work they are paid for. Yes there are State employees that are lazy. There are also lazy sales clerks, lazy plumbers, lazy painters, etc. The majority of State and local workers are just like the rest of society and work hard for their pay. As an example, many years I have brought more money into State coffers they my salary and benefits

These are the facts, not speculations by someone that doesn't care to know the truth.

Oh yeah, the $750. We might get $300 of that after the State and Feds take out there share!

You're right, Tiderunner, the majority work hard for their pay-- no argument there.
But there are lots of them who don't, and unlike the sales clerks and plumbers, they're being paid with money taken by threat of force from the taxpayers.
More importantly, there are a lot of positions that are unnecessary, and departments that should be shrunk or eliminated.
But regardless of all that, the tone of the union flyer tells the tale.
We must SHRINK the government. To do that, we must reduce the payroll significantly. Not with raises or bonuses. With level or reduced funding.
We're in tough times, and we must ALL shoulder the burden.
What you described is what has been happening everywhere in the private sector (for those who still have jobs..)
I'd guess your healthcare, holidays, vacation, etc is still well beyond what most private sector jobs provide.
I'd be happy with it.
I don't mean any harm, but you all need to realize that things will have to change, or this state will go under.

TideRunner that is a good post. The problem is the Unions are not negotiating for the workers. They are negotiating for the Union. That is the problem. The Unions put these incompetent Politians in office and then do not hold them responsible for these cuts forced on the State Employee and wasteful spending. They also do not force the Politians to suffer the same way as the Worker.

Unions are leaches sucking the blood out of their members for union dues. If you don't think so ask them what they ask for first in a contract (check off). They want dues to be paid out of paychecks. And, they could care less about the company. So, who do they care about? The only ones left, THE UNION! Leaches!
