Mental Health Warnings Preceded Rampage, As Arizona Gunman Likely Went Untreated

If the gunman in Saturday’s mass shooting had sought mental health treatment years ago, doctors could have been able to work out his problems before he allegedly unleashed terror on the crowd outside a Safeway in southern Arizona, a top state health official told FoxNews.com on Monday.

But that early intervention likely never happened. Though colleagues and acquaintances expressed concern, particularly over the past year, about Jared Lee Loughner’s mental state, no evidence has yet emerged showing he sought treatment.

Pima Community College effectively kicked Loughner off campus last September after a series of disruptions and told him that if he ever wanted to return he’d need a “mental health clearance” from a professional saying he did not present a danger. Loughner never returned with the document.

Dr. Laura Nelson, deputy director for behavioral health at the Arizona Department of Health Services, told FoxNews.com the state has no record of Loughner, 22, seeking mental health treatment in the public system.

“I truly believe that it could have (helped),” Nelson said.

Someone wanna tell me why compreshensize background checks on firearms purchases are a bad thing?

Anonymous said...

I believe it's spelled Comprehensive Background Check.

True enough, 12:31. Speedy typing kills sometimes. My mistake.

I suppose the NRA would support a "compreshensize background check" though. Gets them out of having to do anything.

OR

As I am always told by the right wingers who inhabit this blog: "I always LOL when the Libs start complaining about spelling. It proves they know nothing. Palin 2012!!"

It's sad because he was clearly mentally ill. There is very little help for parents who have children who have brain disorders.

Here comes the assault on the second amendment. Every time some left wingnut decides to shoot somebody the gun nuts want to trash the constitution.

Dont blame the NRA or the store where he bought the gun.The blame should be with those who saw the signs of mental issues and did nothing to help!

What can you do with a 22yo? He makes his own decisions.

I think the blame lies at the feet of the one who did the shooting.

It is definitely hard when someone has a bipolar condition or any other mental/emotional condition. If the people who noticed it would of come forth earlier in his life maybe this would of been prevented. I don't know about everyone else but when you look at his picture..i see evil in his eyes, no remorse and definitely looks like he is pretty proud of himself. Thoughts and prayers go out to every victim and their families of this terrible tragedy. I feel for his parents as well...
