Nominations for the 2011 Comcast Parent Involvement Matters Award must be postmarked by Jan. 19 to be considered for this award which recognizes outstanding parental involvement activities. Entry information is posted below.
The Comcast Parent Involvement Matters Award is an annual award for parents and guardians whose exemplary contributions to public education have led to improvements for Maryland’s schoolchildren, teachers, schools, programs and/or policies. Comcast created the award with the Maryland State Department of Education to highlight the positive impact parents and guardians have on public schools and to encourage all parents and guardians to get involved in whatever way they can.
Nominees are being sought for five areas of parental involvement, described below. Nominees can demonstrate involvement in one area or multiple areas, but must have made a significant, positive impact on public education with their involvement within the last 24 months.
Areas of parental involvement include:
Communication: Fostering communication that impacts the school community
Volunteering: Recruiting or organizing volunteers, or supporting school activities, both internal and external
Learning: Organizing or coordinating learning activities that reinforce homework or classroom skills
Community Collaboration: Coordinating resources and services for the school community, which could include fundraisers that would enhance a school’s services or environment, or coordinating resources or services from the school community that may serve an external community
Decision Making: Participating on decision-making committees, or in programs that advocate system or policy changes, or serving as a representative for the school or education community
A nominee must be a parent or guardian of a current Maryland public school student, and cannot be an employee of Comcast, Maryland State Department of Education, or any Maryland public school system. A semifinalist for each of the 24 Maryland public school systems will be announced in the spring. Judges will then select five finalists from which a statewide Parental Involvement Matters Award winner will be chosen.
