The Last Ride Of Peggy Pusey

FRUITLAND -- Peggy Pusey could hardly hold back the tears as she listened to driving instructor and secretary Tammy Wheatley talk about the sad news heard from her boss just a few days ago.

Pusey told her six employees that her business, Peggy Pusey's Driving School, would close its doors forever after almost 45 years this weekend. Wheatley, with misting eyes, had been here for seven years and said that hers was not a "normal job."

"Peggy is like my grandmother and she means so much to me," Wheatley said, her voice breaking.

It seems like just yesterday that Pusey stood in her horse pasture, which also served as a driving range, having her photo taken for a newspaper story in 1966. When she opened, she was the first woman instructor in Wicomico County and the second driving school business in the county at the time.

They need to put Drivers Education back into the schools!
Part of the problem with young drivers nowadays is they're not being taught to drive!
These driving schools, for the most part are only about the money!
No oversight!

Peggy Pusey's driving school is a land mark for those of us who grew up here.

Peggy Pusey gave 110% always. She really is everything she seems to be.. Took her class in 1970. We were sad when it ended but always knew we had a friend in her. She has to be the best.

I am glad someone else agrees with what I have been saying for years.

People just do not have the driving skills to operate a motor vehicle.

Having a drivers license used to mean something. Now they hand them out if you can drive around a block without hitting something.

Peggy Pusey taught my Dad how to drive and then later on taught me how to drive.

She used to take him home to Crisfield and would let him drive so he could get his driving hours in.

Truly the end of an era.
