Public Input Sought On Proposal To Name Field At County Stadium After Charles R. Berry

The Wicomico County Public School System is currently accepting input on a proposal to name the field at County Stadium the Charles R. Berry Field. A community group has requested that the field be named Berry Field after the longtime football coach, teacher and athletic supervisor.
Anyone who would like to give feedback on this proposal in particular, or on naming schools and school facilities in general, should make their comments by Dec. 20 by leaving a voicemail message on the school system’s Public Input Line at 410-677-5251; sending an email to comments@wcboe.org; or mailing a letter to the superintendent’s attention at Wicomico County Public Schools, PO Box 1538, Salisbury, Md. 21802. The superintendent will share any input received with the Board of Education.

To allow adequate opportunity for public input, the field naming proposal will not be on the agenda for the Board’s next meeting, which will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 14, at the Board of Education Office in Salisbury.

Editor's Note:  Who is  Charles Berry and what makes him so important to have the  field at the stadium named after him?  Doesn't the BOE have more important things to do, like look for ways to CUT costs AND educate our kids?

Joe - It was said that Coach Berry bled blue and gold since those are Wi-Hi's colors. The stadium is used by kids at all 4 high schools. I don't understand why this keeps coming up. The school board should focus on what is important.

A educator, a coach, a mentor and father type figure to many students for most of his life.
Coach Berry is the type of man who deserves to be respected, admired and honored.

Ask Tony Sarbanes who Charles Berry is? Sarbanes has been working behind the scenes for a long time to push this one through. It's going to happen because it is against the policy, but they found a "loop hole." Wink Wink!!

It's named County Stadium and it's used by all schools in the county. Leave the name as it is.

10:28 Am - What a slap in the face to the other hundreds of coaches, teachers, mentors, administrators, volunteers, etc. who have done the same thing and are not constantly seeking recognition.

Been in Wicomico county my whole life played in County stadium as well and I have never heard of Mr. Berry, the stadium name needs to be left alone for it's historical value.

Wow, Chuck Berry! I remember listening to his albums when I was 20! "My Ding-a-Ling" was my favorite!

Charles Berry?? Don't know who he is, but know many other coaches who deserve the same recognition. If this passes, look for many of us to come forth to name other places after coaches that inspired us. I think the BOE has more important things to do than this!!!
