Throw The Bums Out!

Gary Comegys, Louise Smith and Shanie Shields have moved forward with the sale of the old Fire Station 16 for pennies on the dollar and they also agreed to purchase a $900,000.00 Fire Boat, which is completely unnecessary.

Shanie Shields became a real estate expert by stating, "if you leave a large building empty, it will start to deteriorate in value." NOT TRUE. Many of the buildings on the Downtown Plaza were purchased for low prices and are far more valuable today then they were back when they were purchased and many sit empty. In time, when we get the right kind of leadership on the Council the Downtown will come back to life. I should add, many property owners are subjected to buildings sitting empty because of the economy. Many of us would love to sell them but cannot afford to take a loss from an apraised value of $750,000.00+ down to $150,000.00. How convenient for the City Council to do such a thing.

However, while we continue to sell off properties worthy of much more money, it drives the value of those properties way down and they're destroying the economy and market even more. To add salt to that wound, why not sell it to someone who will compete with other honorable business men and women who have put everything they own on the line to survive in the restaurant business and hurt them too.

Shanie, Louise and Gary are no good for the City of Salisbury and shame on all of you who voted these people into Office. The bums need to go.

Now let's talk about the new Fire Boat. Gordy and Hoppes claim the maintenance costs will be around $12,000.00 a year. OK Boat owners, its time for YOU to chime in. Does a $900,000.00 vessel only cost $12,000.00 a year to maintain? My guess is that the City purchased a three year extended warranty but they claim the manufacturer threw it into the deal for $900,000.00. The first three years shouldn't really require a lot of maintenance but soon after that is when the costs start rising.

So property values are being driven down by the City Council and purchases of new buildings and things like a $900,000.00 Fire Boat continue to raise taxes and or you get less services, (no roads being paved, as an example). Salisbury is quickly becoming a dump but the elite enjoy the benefits of reduced values.

All I can say is, Campbell and Cohen better have darned good excuses for not being at yesterday's meeting that moved things forward. The City Council is all about wants, not needs. The City of Salisbury does not NEED to sell the old Fire Station and the City of Salisbury does not NEED a new $900,000.00 Fire Boat. Mayor Ireton believes that since the grant money to purchase the Boat is coming from Homeland Security, it's not our money, so why not. I have personally heard him say this about many different projects. Democrats do not seem to understand that it still costs each and every one of us money. The more we continue to purchase items like this, the more dependent we become to our Government.

$12,000 annually in maintenance? I think you better rework your numbers SFD porkers! Maintenance includes more than just "fixin and polishin" when it comes to boats and fire apperatus. Hired staff, training, fuel, repairs, tuning, etc are all included in maintaining a boat. If this $900,000 boat is only going to cost $4,000 more to maintain than the existing boat then they must think we're idiots! There isn't even a marine mechanic around here that is certified to work on Hamilton Jet Drives-Gotta go to Jersey for that one folks! Plus you know that they are going to "train" everybody on their new toy for the next year; what's that going to cost?!

"We've always had a vessel that made do. It wasn't designed for our purpose and it wasn't new." Exactly Gary! IT WASN'T NEW so it isn't worth a dime to you! "and won't cost our city taxpayers" Hey Gary, where do you think homeland security gets their money from??? TAXPAYERS!!! We aren't as stupid as you!

How could I possibly comment on this without cussing or name calling? These people have no idea. I can not wait until they are all voted out. LAMES !!

"All I can say is, Campbell and Cohen better have darned good excuses for not being at yesterday's meeting that moved things forward."

What difference would it have made, Joe? It was an extra meeting scheduled for when the three-who-ram-it-down-our-throats knew they could not be there. Everyone knows that. If they had been there, it would have been 3 to 2 -- AS ALWAYS!

Both of those women have been on the record about the fireboat and firestation and they are the only two with a brain on that council. The only way things will get better is to get rid of the three bums on the council and add people with brains. Who knows? Then we might see the spineless mayor live up to his promises.

Rule of thumb. Boat upkeep is about 10% per year of the purchase price. So maintenance sould be about $90,000 per year especially in a few years when everything starts being replaced.

The city government in Salisbury has been a disgrace for years, but particularly now.
Aside from Debbie and Terry (who can't do squat against a majority determined to push their pet schemes through) they are CORRUPT TO THE CORE.
And they have become quite brazen in jamming their agenda down the throats of the citizens, like it or not.

Throw the bums out.

But the next question-- WHO is going to run?

Don't wait till March or April and expect to beat the corrupt machine. You need to get on the job RIGHT NOW! Let people know what you stand for and build a campaign organization that absolutely cannot be ignored.

These brazen idiots are going to set themselves and their friends up while they still can, but MAY IS COMING!

That large boat will be like the large fire engine. Its too large for the job it needs to do. It probally cant turn around on the river. Like the large fire engine it can hardly go down some of these streets. Most time bigger is not better.

I would like to see Ivan Barkley in our city government in any position. Even Mayor!

If your a farmin then bigger is better.

The three people on the council , comegy , smith and shields are very similar to the sick peole that commit numerous murders. They love to see their names in the paper and on the blog. This is typical of under-educated people who want to make decisions , even if it is the wrong one.All three are very damaging to society and the area. I still can't believe that shields is allowed to speak in public , if you really new about her education you would understand why she talks like an idiot. Comegy on the other hand is equal to a 9th grade education as is smith.
Please wake up Salisbury , these idiots have to go.
Comegy shouldn't be allowed to make any decision , I won't get into why , but his doctors know.
Smith has a brain of a 4 year old most of the time , on some occasions it does come to life and appears that of a 10 year old.
Shanie , what can I say , 15 samich eatin idiot.

Be prepared to spend 3 times (the purchase price of the boat) in maintenance costs over the life of boat.

The Salisbury Fire Department is the biggest joke on the shore.

Has anyone thought about investing in a boat lift to keep the new boat out of the water? Maybe this will help to keep costs down not being in that nasty water. Just food for thought.

anonymous 10:43, wouldn't that be saying something like, if Fernando got a fight with a champion he knew he couldn't beat, why fight, right? Coulcil members are there for the good of the taxpayers. You can't win every battle but you should at least step into the ring and fight the battle.

Anonymous said...

10:43 - it doesn't matter - they weren't there - regardless of the vote....they need to be there. They will be held accountable otherwise. Apathy is not called for at this time...dunno how you can try and justify their absence regardless...

JA - well said....!

Use the $900,000 plus maintenance costs for better use...more law enforcement with better training to help Salisbury recover is one such better use.

All this thing does is pump water from the river and shoot it 100 ft in the air..... Why cant we get a local boat builder to do this?

Can the Fire Dept at least show when a fire boat could been used in the past to justify this purchase?

See, I told you the Mayor picked the wrong guy as Chief.

If the city had accepted Joe's offer of $250K for the firehouse, there would be at least $100K more available--enough to fund the "$12,000/yr" maintenance of the fireboat for many years.
Am I right?
Why did they walk away from a $250K offer?
Joe- you did offer $250K in cash, right?
No contingencies?
On TV with witnesses?

Has anyone looked at Google Earth for the area of coverage for the boat? It's only about a mile of area from the city docks down to bell island.

I ran four election campains for "Von" Siggers. the Fourth one Shaine won mostly because I was moving and Von was really very busiy working on her Master Theses. Shenia won by two votes because the absent votes were tossed out. Quit whining you got what you the public voted for.

In the first election I saw Shaine in the voting boths with other people showing them how to mark their ballots. the ch47 news crew was ther but choose to do nothing, I comlained to the voting judges that were there, then did nothing. Again, Quit whining you got what you voted for

i was at that meeting and talked t0 some of the firemen afterward. the new chief is a nice guy but clueless agout the boat and what goes on in this town. hoppes is still spoouting his usual diatribe about the boat. i told them they cant do what the grant papers say they will do and they are kidding themselves if they think they can. the grant papers call for them to be first responders for half of the chesapeake bay and the nanticoke and wicomico rivers. their response time to places like phillips landing in the naticoke river will be so bad that in the case of an emergency they might as well stay home. they stated at the meeting that the coast guard in criffield told them that it takes one and one half hours for the coast guard to get to salisbury. the coast guard boat runs approximately 48 knots. the salisbury boat will run approximately 36 mph. talk about slow response time. you cant tell the leadership anything, they know it all. they also told me that it wouldnt cost the city any money to train the crews. another lie. thanks, sjd

I hadn't thought of it before but I agree with 10:59, Ivan Barkley for MAYOR!!!!

J.Albero said...

To those of you IDIOTS who believe Ivan Barkley should run for Mayor. ONE, it only pays $35,00.00 a year, IDIOTS. Why would the man leave his job with more than double that pay to be Mayor of the crappiest City on the East Coast? TWO, Ivan is not as stupid as Jim Ireton.

Anonymous said...

Oh no Joe, now the mayor will ask for a raise.

Here is the real scoop on the Fire Boat.
The winner(s) are: Gordo and his Petroleum buddies on the river.
They will benefit the most and Gordo covered them.
The Loser(s): City tax payers again.

Keep on believing the lies of Gordo and Hoppy.
And Jimmy continues to be a blunder.

Anonymous said...

Sure would like to get to see the grant papers they submitted for these funds. I wonder how many lies are in that document.

I have been a member of the Salisbury Fire Department for over 25 years and I can tell you the fire boat has never been used for a fire. Or at least not in my life time. "Just in case" is not a good excuse or justification for wasting tax dollars.

Sorry SJ, no offense but you are clueless about the new fire chief. He is not a nice guy, but he comes across as nice to some. He has already attacked a firefighter during one of the shift meetings. He has already threatened the fire officers about posting on Joes blog and threatened to hunt them down. Threatened them with "resources" to do them in.

You are right that he is clueless about Salisbury. He is so stupid that he is allowing Gordy, Hoppes and Bragg to continue to run the fire department as same ole same ole. It is still the good ole boy system at its best. He doesn't care about the fire department or the city. It is the best job that he has ever had and he is the boss. Nothing but an ego booster for him. Way to go Ireton and city council members. We all got screwed again. And guess what? I am sick and tired of "waiting for the next election."

This is just another push it through at all costs. Who cares how the people feel? I guess they figure if they lose all their seats, at least they'll have their pretty boat and a friend taken care of.

Also, Joe, you and another person here made it sound like Debbie Campbell and Terry Cohen did not attend this work session on whim. How many times has that Louise woman scheduled work sessions to suit her buddies and cut Debbie Campbell out (and US too!)

I don't want a council made up only of unemployed face stuffers and state retirees. Debbie Campbell and Terry Cohen work and have kids (so do a lot of US!)

I think the person who said it wouldn't have mattered if they were there or not was just stating a simple fact. It wouldn't have mattered. But after the way those two have fought for us little people it's wroong for anyone to try to make it sound like they haven't stepped up or have given up. I don't see that at all.

As a past candidate for the Fire Chief's position, I would not go along with the need for a fire boat. More emphasis needs to be placed on recruitment and retention, training, basic and advanced life support, public education and listening to the residents and business community. I believe this boat, no matter the cost, will become a green heron situation.
