Could WBOC Survive Without Salisbury News Any More?

One look at tonight's news on WBOC will clearly tell you the answer is, NO. Someone just called and told me they're even going LIVE at 6 PM from the old Fire Station. They also covered the Perdue story I published today as well. It wasn't news until SBYNews exposed it. Oh, turns out I was right. 140 jobs will be going to Delaware and will NOT be returning. So the Mayor can claim they're doing renovations all he wants, Salisbury/Wicomico County just LOST 100+ jobs AGAIN.

I do not know how much longer all of these local plant closings can go on. Private sectors are exiting so fast - and then within just a few short months - the State & Local government takes up mammoth expansion. Look at what has transpired with Dresser/SU College, Powerwave/Tri-County Council. Now Perdue is heading north of State line with 2 million dollar Delaware grant. Where does the Maryland State and Local government think they are going to get all of this money. Don't they understand that each facility is going to require lights, electricity, insurance, personnel, and maintenance?
It is a recipe for economic disaster. For the Maryland taxpayers - better start looking now to exodus to because you'll never be able to afford to live here.

I just watched and your right.

Joe I don't watch the news on T.V. anymore. I get all my local, national and breaking news from you and your crew. When you start your T.V. news station I would love to work for you. ^_^

could someone please claify...is this move the actual corporate headquarters you can see from Rt. 50 or is it another "division" of Perdue?

They just had a piece about the story you did YESTERDAY about the LORA not being happy about what the council is considering to do with the firehouse. I guess tomorrrow they will cover your piece from today about the decision to buy the fire boat and to sell the firehouse. Great job, Joe!!

Sad, Sad reporting, WBOC. Time to catch up on real time events since you claim to be the #1 news source on Delmarva.

Oh come on. You are doing good things Joe, and probably making the local news outlets do a little better.

But, I don't know what it is but comparing yourself to them just seems wrong.

Admittedly, I don't watch either of the news stations so I don't really know what type of job they do. I get my news from the internet AND your blog.

Eh, what the heck. You've come a long way. If you wanna blow your horn you have earned it.

You are a positive force around here so I'll just leave it at that and wish you continued success.

The problem with WBOC is, its all Delaware news all the time! Very little to say about Maryland. Located in Salisbury, but rarely reports the news happening in Maryland side of the Eastern Shore!

I don't know. They do actual journalism rather than rely on people's questions and random replies from a blog. They tend to get the facts rather than blind speculation.

So no, they don't rely on you.

OK George, let's talk about the FACTS from the WBOC broadcast tonight.

FACT, they stated dozens of jobs would be lost. While this may be accurate, the number is actually 140 to 150 jobs, FACT.

FACT, a citizen offered $250,000.00 for that old Fire Station, the City has agreed, (so far) to a $100,000.00 offer instead. Did WBOC tell you all the FACTS?

You absolutely CANNOT tell all of the FACTS in a 15 second sound bite. That's a FACT.

Nice try. Oh, FACT, they didn't even mention the Fire Boat and the FACT is, they were NOT at ANY of the Council Work Sessions to get their information. Instead, they relied on Shanie Shields meeting them at the Fire Station and all she talked about was the building being abandoned.

Are you still the manager at Beaver Dam?

Joe I applaud your work but take a chill pill. The local news actually likes to get their story as straight as possible BEFORE publishing, unlike you who can post whatever opinions you have and mask them as facts.

J.Albero said...

anonymous 9:19, again, I'll repeat, they didn't tell the FACTS, period.

Like it or not, WBOC follows Salisbury News 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and that's a FACT.

I know several former employees who have all told me on different occasions that's what they were told to do.

At least WMDT has the decency of giving SBYNEWS.COM credit for using our stories. WBOC thinks they're too big to do so. That's OK, it's catching up with them and in 2011 they'll really feel the pinch. Every year we come out with something new and 2011 will be a big year for us. You'll see.

I use wjz . Md's news station.

Because I know WBOC is reading these comments I'll add. The story you did on the Dorcester County Humane Society roof, nice story. I sat there with a pen and paper to write down a contact number for donations but guess what, they NEVER gave it. They demanded people go to their EWebsite instead and search for the article to get the number. VERY unfortunate for the Humane Society because if you had given the number I would have sent a donation. Salisbury News is Delmarva's News Leader. WBOC is like toilet paper wiping up the rear.

Anonymous 8:07,agreed! It's truly sad how few stories they show about Maryland. It's 98% Delaware news, 1% Maryland and 1% Other areas. Since they call themselves DELMARVA'S NEWS LEADER,maybe they should show more MD stories!

I need to ask this. WBOC is located in Salisbury. Now they are reporting stories from Chestertown. They actually attended a Bd of Ed meeting in Chestertown. They also did a story about the Mayor of Chestertown concerned about J-walking and wanting to have plastic bags completely removed from her town. People in Chestertown don't even get WBOC there, they watch WJZ. Do you remember calling them about the Fruitland meeting concerning the sign ordinance and it didn't seem important enough for them to show up? Why are the local stories not important enough for them to cover for those of us who can get that channel? Joe, I get all of my news from you. I watch them or WMDT for the weather if I missed the Weather Channel. I remember a time when local news made them what they are. I guess local wasn't good enough but to show stories where those citizens can't even view it? Yes, there are lots of Delaware stories but they are able to view it.

Just curious

I did the same thing Joe. Waited for a phone number or address. My dog came from the Wicomico Humane Society so I try to donate to these places. What about those people who don't have internet, how will they get the information?

Anonymous said...

sure they could, and they did long before you rush limbaugh and hannity lackeys came on the scene,i still read the times every morning to get the real unfiltered news, not the fox and drudge revisionist news with the concervative bias,oh i'm sorry,i forgot they are the ones that are fair and balanced.

"you can wine and moan all you want but in the end your jealous because they actually get paid for doing their job"

They are NOT doing their job. They are relying on others to find the story so they can use it. Their job is to find out things going on around town not to steal it from here.

That it's Perdue is troublesome.

Anonymous said...

WBOC has lost sight of who they should be. Years ago they brought in a "consultant" to tell them how to run their station. First mistake!

They've lost several of their key reporters who really gave a damn and covered stories which were important to our community and had lots of important contacts in our community. Another mistake!

I never see them at community functions let along City or Council Meetings. That's just sad!

They have sold out to the "almighty buck" as you would call it. And, it's not working for us, the citizens. And, I bet it's not working for them either since I don't see many advertisers using WBOC.

Just read this comment on DT site.

Bend over Salisbury, the shaft is being greased. Business owners on the North Prong beware, you are about to get the shaft. Remember the statement city attorney, Paul Wilber made some time ago regarding the North Prong development? He said, once Perdue is gone it's done. Well guess what, Perdue is moving North to Seaford and will have no further need of barges coming up the Wicomico River.

They will spend millions developing the North Prong and will have no one with any money to spend at these proposed businesses. This equates to MORE EMPTY BUILDINGS DOWNTOWN!!! Way to go Salisbury. Enjoy that jogging trail behind Lake St.
