Is Salisbury Now A Safer Place To Live & Work?

According to the new Chief of Police, things will be much safer now. Critics continued to attack Mayor Jim Ireton for delaying hiring a new Fire Chief and Police Chief but last night should change all of that.

A multitude of Department Heads and Citizens gathered at the new Fire Station 16 for the swearing in of the Police Chief, Fire Chief and IT Director. Newly elected States Attorney for Wicomico County Matt Maciarello, Fruitland Police Chief Mike Phillips and County Executive Rick Pollitt also attended this event to show their support.

Councilwomen Terry Cohen and Debbie Campbell were the only Council Members to attend, which surprised me quite a bit. Louise Smith, Gary Comegys and Shanie Shields did not attend the event.

30 minutes before the event took place a Salisbury Police Officer was injured while making an arrest, making it somewhat stressful for the Mayor and new Police Chief as they wanted to be by the Officer's side at PRMC. I can tell you the Mayor and Police Chief immediately left the event to head to the Hospital.

So, is Salisbury a safer place to live and work. Time will tell and everyone needs to give these new leaders a chance to prove themselves. One can only hope we've seen the worst in Salisbury and better days are ahead.

I for one will be hoping that this change will make Salisbury a safer place. We can only offer our support and cooperation and let these people do their job.

Smith and Shields' absence says something, doesn't it?
I'll give Comegys a pass on this one, just out of respect for his condition.

One of the things that stands out to me from these pictures is - the new Chief isn't interested in photo ops. It appears as though she really didn't want to be in those pictures.
That speaks volumes! She's more interested in doing the job unlike the past Chief!

12:13, funny you should mention that. The other thing I noticed? In the group picture, the body language.

Everyone in that picture either has their arms around someone or hands neatly folded in front...except...

Pam Oland (redhead far left) and Lore Chambers (woman in red far right).

Both have their hands behind them.

I'll let you look that up in your body language book.

To the new chiefs, godspeed and serve us well.

The city can't make the traffic light in front of Parkside High work 3 days in a row so how the heck can they keep the streets safe?

Its no wonder the City of Salisbury is the laughing stock of Maryland you have Bozo the clown for mayor.

I will be speaking with a recruiter for SPD very soon. I would love to work for a chief who is proactive and wants to make true changes!!

The mayor And city council Don't give a crap about changes or making the city safer. If they Really did they would ensure They keep already sworn officers by paying them EQUAL WITH NEIGHBORING AGENCIES (county/state), They Would increase manpower by increasing the authorized force size tremendously, And finally give SPD the equipment they need. Instead they merely Wanna appear as if change Is occurring. Mayor And city council to date you are jokes. Lots of TALK little veryyyyy little action, hence full of crap.

Duncan Maybe a great leader IF the mayor And city council don't handcuff her with bull crap And refuse to give her the tools needed to fix This town...officers and pay to keep already serving officers

I hope the new Police Chief will work with all parties in the community, not just the chosen few the Mayor picks.

3:04 Great ideas, how you going to pay for them? Any mention of increase taxs and everybody goes nuts.

I doubt seriously this will be a safer place to live with those 2 "come here's." I'm headed to the county as soon as my house sells. May even move to Worcester County. Screw Jim Liarton and the rest of the loser council members.

Ireton / Obama

They look the same to me, mirror image

No. The Gangs and Thugs rule this town. Further, the maryland judicial system needs an over.

3:04 you are right in some respects, but fail to mention that Cohen and Campbell have been strong supporters of fiar pay for police and fire personnel, neccessary equipment (while not supporting frivolity like a fire boat). I am not surprised that they were there last night. They do understand what t is to be a public servant and that police and fire are among the top services that a city should be delivering for the public. I am sure that their presence was appreciated. If you doubt what I say check the record.

Ireton did not WANT to be by the injured officer's side, he went because the Chief and the State's Attorney wanted to be there to support one of their own and he didn't want to be left out. He has NEVER cared about the officers before and has been bashing them every chance he gets. I wish the public could hear the way he talks to members of the police dept. he has never said anything supportive to them and treats them like crap. If I was that injured officer I would have told the mayor where he could go. ireton should stick with his friends at flamers of italy!

Ireton doesn't care about crime only wants to say he does...if I'm wrong Jim then lets see you hire more officers And pay more to the ones you have before more shootings happen

12:42 GREAT observation!!!

Ireton should take a lesson from snow hill and give all his city employees a bonus for the crap of his they put up with in the last year. people are fed up with him, stand by for a mass exodus, lets see how the all america city runs then!

The council majority (Smith, Comegys, Shields) don't want to fight crime in Salisbury, nor does Ireton. They just give a bunch of lip service. Ireton put Leatherbury up for selection, he's a good cop BUTTTTT Shields recused herself from voting so that's a big no vote, Comegys didn't bother to show up and Smith voted against Leatherbury. How do I know this to be true, just ask Ernie Leatherbury he'll tell you. Ireton promises Barkley the job of Chief as long as he wants to follow Ireton's vision. I guess he didn't agree with Ireton because Ireton never put Ivan Barkley up for consideration by the council.

Jim Ireton is Barrie Tilghman in a suit, he fits right in with the council majority. He says one thing, does another then throws a hissy fit when anyone says something he disagrees with.

I feel sorry for the new department heads having to work with a bunch like that. One consolation...APRIL IS COMING!!!

6:10pm AMEN BROTHER! if people only knew how Ireton has spoken to Officers in the past, they would be shocked! He has made it clear that he doesnt care about the PD. Sissy is a great way to describe him and his behavior.

Drop Lore Chambers, that would pay for 2 or 3 more police officers.

Does the chief even have arrest powers in MD? I know that isn't a requirement to be a police chief in MD...but she would need some type of comparative compliance training to meet MPTC's standards
