Wicomico County Board Of Education Welcomes Up With People To Salisbury

The Wicomico County Board of Education is sponsoring the upcoming Up with People show in Salisbury. In addition to the Oct. 12 concert for the public, the visit by Up with People will include activities with some of our schools. Please read on for additional information on the show and for information on how to host Up with People cast members during their visit.

Up with People Show Will Entertain Salisbury Oct. 12

When the multinational cast of Up with People takes the stage at Wicomico High School in Salisbury on Tuesday, October 12 at 7 p.m. audience members will find something for virtually every musical taste and interest.

Long before American Idol began discovering and refining new talent or High School Musical tapped into the exuberance of young ensemble casts, Up with People pioneered these attributes while touring the world with their optimistic message of global cooperation and goodwill.

Up with People’s all-new production is entitled “A Song for the World” which features the energy and talent of a cast and staff of 90 representing 17 countries. The live two-hour performance includes both original and popular music and is a dynamic blend of feature soloists, full cast production numbers, fast-moving choreography and colorful costumes.

“A Song for the World is really about possibility”, explains Up with People Producer/Director Eric Lentz. “Our goal is to leave our audiences with a sense of believing that each and every one of them has gifts and talents to share. Their song for the world – their ability or skill – may be healing the sick, building a home for the needy, teaching the young. By shining our spotlight on the people and organizations in Salisbury and the great work they do, we hope to inspire our audience members to get out and share their gifts – get involved in their own unique way,” Lentz added.

Audience members will be taken on a musical tour around the world and back in time with special moments including “The Love Medley,” a collection of popular music and dancing moments from the last three decades on the theme of “boy meets girl.”

Throughout the show, international cast members will provide the audience with a glimpse of their own national traditions and cultures through music and dance with musical stops in Europe, Asia, North America and Africa.

“The Sound of Peace” is a poignant moment when the Up with People cast will be joined on stage by children from a local children’s group to sing this moving ballad that ends with the lyric, “If you listen to our voices with your heart, you’ll hear the sound of peace.”

Several new numbers have been added to the show to speak to young people in their style of music and dance including “Sing Your Song,” “One Person” and “Arm Yourself” from top-selling music producer and UWP alumni Angel Cortes.

In addition to Salisbury, Cast B 2010’s fall tour will include 20 cities in the U.S., Mexico, and the Taiwan. In addition to four Super Bowl halftime shows, casts have recently appeared at the 2007 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and as the Opening Act for the 2008 Rose Parade in Pasadena, CA.

Tickets prices for adults are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. Student and senior tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door. Tickets are now on sale at www.upwithpeople.org/Salisbury. For further information please call 410-677-4400 and ask for Up with People.

Bring the World Home – Host an Up with People Cast Member

Families in Salisbury will have the unique opportunity to bring a bit of the world into their own homes between October 10 and 14 when an international cast of Up with People arrives in Salisbury, a stop on their 2010 world tour. The Salisbury visit of up with people is sponsored by the Wicomico County Board of Education.

Host families are being sought to keep one or more students from Cast B 2010, the 90-member Up with People cast and staff which represents 17 countries and more than 25 states. “It is a great opportunity to experience other cultures while sharing your own,” explained Davis.

The opportunity to stay with local families during their stay in each community is a centerpiece of Up with People’s 22-week program. The giving goes both ways…while families share their traditions and local attractions; the cast members share their experiences and cultures.

Local host families are asked to provide a bed, local transportation at the beginning and end of each day, as well as breakfast and most dinners. While gone during the day, participating in regional learning, community service and show preparation, most evenings cast members will be home with the family to participate in their activities and interests.

In addition to many wonderful experiences with their new “son” or “daughter,” each host family will receive two complimentary tickets to the Up with People Show which will be held at Wicomico High School on Tuesday, October 12 at 7 p.m.

“I can honestly say that the dozens of families who have opened their homes to me during my time with Up with People is one of the most meaningful and memorable experiences I have had,” said Davis. I still stay in contact with many of them and I believe they will remain lifelong friends,” she added.

Those with smaller children or young teens in their home often find that the Up with People cast members are wonderful role models and provide a glimpse into other countries, cultures and traditions they might not often experience in Salisbury, Davis added.

Local families in the Salisbury area are being sought to host the cast members between Sunday, Oct. 10 and Thursday, Oct. 14. Those interested in hosting are encouraged to contact Liz Davis on the Salisbury Advance Team at ldavis@upwithpeople.org or by calling 410-677-4400 and asking for Up with People, or 505-850-3113.

Up with People’s visit to Salisbury would not be possible without the help of the Wicomico County Board of Education.
