The Central A/C at the Government Office Building in Downtown Salisbury has failed once again. When employees returned to work on Tuesday they came to learn there was no A/C once again and they have been suffering each day since.
With temperatures well above 100 degrees and the City/County facing near bankruptcy, one has to wonder what the laws are in such a case. Some have mentioned several schools without A/C. Mind you, at least they have windows they can open. There's no such thing at the GOB.

Joe, this system has been a chronic headache for years. I am so sorry the workers for the city and county have to endure. The court building next door had similar problems years ago until Judge Truitt started getting mad and threatening court action against the contractors.
The problem is our current "leadership" is too worried about getting re-elected and making politically based decisions during the past four years to listen to his subordinants. His public information office fails to disclose the true morale problems within his own building.
Yes, Rick will probably get re-elected because the alternative to him would be even worse but he doesn't care one damn bit about his employees no matter what his public mouthpiece claims. I work there - I know.
They should suck it up like anyone else. It's not up to the taxpayer to ensure air conditioning. We've all got to tighten our belts, sometimes it's not pretty. Get over it. If you can't handle it quit. Bet there's 500 people that would stand in line for the job.
And what windows would those be at Bennett Middle? Most are inoperable or only open a few inches. Remember, they're bottom hinge windows that open in at the top, giving just a few inches of exposure to the outside air, and that's when they work. They also make fans pretty useless. But most windows at BMS don't work anyway. And the new BMS won't open until 2015 at the earliest.

What is the deal with the bashing of a person simply because their means of supporting their family is working for the county/city. They certainly don't create the budget or make the rules. Maybe you are just pi$$ed that they have jobs. Where were all of you when the economy was good, and nobody would apply for jobs at the county because the pay sucks. Now you are mad? The sacrifice that these workers took in pay for the security is paying off. Why don't you pull your bottom lip over your head and swallow.

They may have chose to work outside, but they still do it in this heat and many other conditions. Sorry I can't feel bad for some that don't have air conditioning. There are still lots of people that don't have it.
I can assure you 3:07, those who went to work in the GOB are not wearing shorts and tee shirts. The come prepared to work in colder environments. Don't even think I don't feel bad for those forced to work outside in this heat, because I do feel for them.
I'm looking at a Thermometer in the GOB reading 93 degrees right now! I don't mind the heat outside, but this stagnant hot air inside the GOB is a breeding ground for sickness and disease. All we get is an email from Ted Shea at 8:30 this morning suggesting that we wear lighter clothes.
To all you people saying "suck it up" or "you're lucky to have a job":
The GOB AC has been on and off over the past month and today is the first day that we were notified of what the problem really is. We are the last to know things; just like we found out about our life insurance situation through the paper and not the P.O.S. P.I.O. -this is how our local government leaders treat their employees, doesn't it make you wonder what they think about you, the citizens? If the walls of the GOB could talk the would first ask for a glass of water because it's so damn hot and then they'd ruin some political careers!
The reason they don't care about the employees is because they know that they really can't leave because no one else is hiring, and because as demonstrated on this post, lots of people "have it in" for government employees so it is a good political move for Rick to "stick it to the workers". I can't wait for the economy to turn around so I can get the hell out of the county. It would be irresponsible to do so now, and I have a family to support.

While I sit in my air conditioned office with my fan blowing on me I really feel for the GOB workers. With no way of circulating the air, it makes it seem worse that the air outside. At least most of the time outside, a person will get a breeze, although not a cool breeze, it is still circulating air. Nobody should be made to work in conditions such as this. Yes workers that work outside choose to do so in a sense, they should not be forced to work in heat stroke weather. Common sense.

Government employees (especially at the local level) keep the city running. There are a lot of services provided by local governments that we all take for granted. If you want traffic signals, water services, trash/recycling pick up, etc....you want people working in the GOB.
It's also wrong to say that we, the taxpayers, shouldn't be paying for air conditioning. Maybe we shouldn't be paying for electricity or water for the GOB. Forget bathrooms - that's what the streets outside are for. Why do we need computers? People can prick their finger and fill out paperwork with their own blood. Seriously.... we've got to be reasonable.

The custodians at Bennett Middle School are doing hard labor in a building that has never had air conditioning and has always had poor ventilation - it just gets hotter and hotter every single day there - where is the sympathy for them? Oh right - they knew the job conditions when they took the job... Guess it's all about what kind of job you have or maybe it's something else?
I think it is ridiculous that these employees are being forced to work in such hot conditions. What about the people who are sensitive to the heat? There are older people, people with asthma and people who have had heart attacks. What if a visitor to the building has a heart attack or asthma attack and dies because they were in the heat inside the building? What will the taxpayers think then when there is a lawsuit? I know we are trying to balance the budget but this is a lawsuit waiting to happen. If I had a family member who worked inside of this building and something happened to my loved one, you can bet your behind I would sue. It would cost a lot more to pay for attorneys and medical expenses then it would be to fix the a/c. Then throw in the cost to start repairing computers that are crashing because of the heat. Any IT person will tell you that they computers are not meant to function at these temperatures. So fix the a/c before we start incurring expenses that were not necessary. It's not worth someone's life.

So, since the good people (?) of Wicomico County are so fond of saying 'they choose that job' I would suggest the next time you have to go up in someone's attic in 100 degree weather to fix their air conditioning you tell them you will have to come back when it's not soo hot! See how they like that! After all, they choose not to have their air conditioner serviced before the heat wave - didn't they?

And to the person that obviously does heating and air and suggested that you will tell someone it is too hot to work in their attic. That is fine, I will just call the next guy in the book and am sure he/she will be glad to fix it. Also, schmuckaroo, it doesn't have to break just from lack of service. I dont do HVAC. You know what they say about people that assume. I also never said they wouldn't go in the attic. If your system was installed by a dumba$$ as you call them I guess you should do your homework on who you hire to install things. Have a nice day. The heat seems to have made you grumpy.
