OK, while a friend of mine was visiting the Office yesterday the Draw Bridge went up for the second time and it was up for more than 10 minutes. However, the first time it went up, look at what it went up for. I thought you had to give 24 hours notice before they would allow you passage through to the North Prong area?
If someone wants to come back stating that this was perhaps the cleaning crew for the river, well, YOU MISSED A SPOT!

the closure around 2pm caused a back-up nearly 5miles...I was there.
And the idiots that prepared the report for the North Prong want a boat ramp up on the north end for pleasure craft. What a bunch of maroons. Maybe we're the maroons, we paid for that report, in 5 figures.

that is absolutely ridiculous. on a side note, i have no problem whatsoever with the drawbridge having to be used throughout the day. but there are days when it opens at 7:45 or 8:45 and people are trying to get to work and Fitzwater/Parsons is backed up for what seems like a mile. I think the boats should have to wait at that time instead of the cars.
Although some may argue the importance of the DNR surveys, they are necessary to keep us in check. For instance, when the City of Salisbury opened the damn to lower the water level of Johnson's Pond in 2002(The pond in those nice pictures today), the employee openned the damn and then apparently left and forgot about it until some residents called to complain. The DNR then went in and did another "Shock Study" and found that the City had taken a Renowned Fishery and completely killed it. The count went from over 100 to 5. Because of this "study", they were able to prove damage and start a plan to rebuild the fishery. Granted it will probably take 25 years to undo the damage done in hours by the City of Salisbury. But at least it can be justified and started.
Although I agree the Fire Department issue was greatly mishandled and better solutions were probably on the table, I can't blame anyone for calling for the Drawbridge to be opened at any time. The bridge has been there for decades. People wanting to avoid it should take another route, just like many of us avoid the 95/495 Beltway from 8-10am.
iT IS IN FACT THE DNR ELECTROSHOCK SURVEY TEAM, AND IF YOU WOULD LOOK AT THE FEDERAL LAW AS TO WATERWAYS THE WATERWAYS WERE THERE FIRST AND THEREFORE HAVE THE RIGHT OF WAY. SORRY I THINK IT IS A BAD LAW AS WELL SOMEWHAT OUT OF DATE I'D SAY. BUT STILL ON THE BOOKS.
joe, do you ever do any work, or are you ALWAYS looking out your window for one more glorious moment to feel a self-imposed sense of civic good and complain about the bridge? hold your head high there, pal.
I'm a regular fisher down there and I have seen the same mess there for over a year now, and it has never been cleaned or an attempt made to clean it. Sad cause you will see fish feeding off of some of that crap, and we wonder why the fish in this river have lesions.

Ok, while I see a backup when the bridge goes up, but 5 miles? Come on! Maybe.. repeat mabe in the middle of summer before the bipass was done I could see that... but now? No way!! Could be 4 blocks?
