House Republicans Call for Veto of Kirwan Legislation Urge Governor to Veto Bills that Increase Taxes

ANNAPOLIS, MD – House Republicans today sent a letter to Governor Hogan requesting he veto a package of bills that will massively increase state spending and raise taxes on Marylanders. They asked the Governor to veto:

House Bill 1300 – Blueprint for Maryland’s Future – Implementation, known better as the "Kirwan Bill", this legislation increases state and local spending on education by $4 billion per year.

House Bill 732 - Taxation – Tobacco Tax, Sales and Use Tax, and Digital Advertising Gross Revenues Tax increases taxes on a variety of tobacco products. The bill is the first in the nation to tax digital advertising; a likely violation of federal law.

House Bill 932 – 21st Century Economic Fairness Act expands sales tax to digital products; music, movies, e-books, audio books, etc. costing Maryland's taxpayers $120 million per year.

"With the economic toll the COVID-19 pandemic is having on our economy, this is the worst possible time to be increasing spending and increasing taxes," said House Minority Leader Nic Kipke. "Maryland is facing a potential budge shortfall of nearly $3 billion by the end of this fiscal year. We cannot afford this level of spending and Marylanders cannot afford higher taxes."

"The members of our Caucus were opposed to these bills during the 2020 Legislative Session," said House Minority Whip Kathy Szeliga. "We knew then these bills were ill-advised at their conception. Now they are also abysmally timed."

The letter is available here.

They should also add a veto of the mandatory $15 minimum wage by 2025 bill.

The Kirwin bill was passed when Democrats were fat, dumb and happy and thought they could tax and spend indefinitely. A lot has changed in the past few months. The only people with money to pay taxes are government employees and a few retirees who had sufficient investments. The State of Maryland, along with most counties and municipalities will soon be begging for money from taxpayers who have none to spare.

Since Lockdown Larry has gone full-blown Democrat with Covid I have a feeling that he won't be vetoing anything. I think he is on a power trip and doesn't have time for running the state any longer.

I knew Lockdown Larry was a POS when they made that clown in SC that killed 9 church members look like a "Confederate Terrorist" and he demanded the state of Maryland take back all Sons of Confederate Veterans license plate.

Then one Wednesday night in August while the entire General Assembly was in Ocean City for the Annual Maryland Association of Counties Conference he had the Judge Taney statue taken down from in front of the State House. This was done late at night so it proves that Fat Larry is a dirty rotten snake in the grass. He can't be trusted and he is a Dick Tater.

Flags and statues are more important than???? Its simple history taken or removed its history.

Food on my table is more important.

Jobs are more important.

VOTING is more important because if you don't like the numbnuts in office its the ONLY time we can fix that....or run for office ourselves.

Rest is just stuff. I know I know, our liberties, our FREEDOM, our Rights.

Blah blah blah. Thats been the same arguments since 1776. Its now 2020 and we still NEED to eat, NEED to live, NEED to love. Bitchin about flags, statues and RINOs...SMH.

Ditto. First year I got a tax return - small that it was - in MD I would have paid more taxes. So nice to be able to keep my money and spend it the way I want too.
