City of Rehoboth Beach, Delaware

CodeRED Message from City Manager Sharon Lynn

All residents of the City of Rehoboth Beach have been urged to shelter in place, to stay at home and not leave your houses unless absolutely necessary as confirmed cases of the disease continue to rise daily. As reported just a few hours ago by the Delaware Division of Public Health there have been 214 total laboratory-confirmed cases in the state since March 11 and 59 of these are from Sussex County. The total number of positive cases represents a cumulative total since the pandemic began.

We continue to urge all second homeowners in the City to heed warnings and ask everyone to think of your neighbors and your families, and to protect your own health by sheltering in your primary homes. This is a pandemic. In a small community like ours, hospitals do not have the beds and staff for the growing number of COVID-19 cases that could affect our City. Please consider the impacts of potentially and unknowingly being a carrier of the virus and possibly infecting others. Please consider coming to your second home when circumstances improve. Our primary goal is public safety for all! Nothing is more important at this time than doing everything we can to ‘flatten the curve’ and slow the spread of COVID-19 so that our health care system is not overwhelmed.

Rest assured Mayor Kuhns is in communication with Governor Carney often. The Commissioners monitor all contact regularly and are frequently in touch with the Mayor and me. Should other emergency measures be warranted we will inform you immediately. We have been able to use electronic sign boards to transmit messages advising the public of closures and the police department now has an emergency message they are broadcasting on the Boardwalk and beach to keep people from exercising themselves and their dogs.

Please understand that your City Government is operating within the State of Emergency. Although it is the weekend, we continue to work off-site and emergency responders throughout the City are working 24/7 with one goal-to keep you all safe and informed. We are trying very hard to provide clear and concise information. Please contact us by email to allow time to answer your questions and please check the City’s website atcityofrehoboth.com frequently as messages are added often.

We must be united, vigilant and stick together. We will get through these trying times.

Curios: I wonder if most of these cases in Sussex County are in the beaches area?

Where else would ones second home most likely be in Delaware? They definitely don't have any mountains with cabins. All of the well to do northern tool fleeing from New York. That's my guess.

What about short term rentals?

Unknown said...

What guidelines have been established for short term rentals?

I appreciate these efforts. But, this message came out to late. People flocked to our community, The Peninsula, over two weeks ago. Hopefully when this peaks a second time, Delaware will put these measures in place sooner. Stay safe everyone.

Why don't the state officials enforce like this like Rhode Island so many outta staters at our beaches who could be infecting Delawarians

Might be a good time to look at the infrastructure in Delaware. Since there have been a ton of new housing developments think someone needs to address the burden that this has caused to the roads as well as the hospitals if a pandemic occurs like we have now.

I do not see any answer to the question... I'm in a Winter rental which is about to end what am I to do? I live here and have since last summer and not 100% sure what I'm supposed to do...

Yes good observation I live in Newark and we need basic infrastructure upgrades . Medical care in this state is also sub par and not consistent as you go into lower Delaware .For a small state with a small budget I think our Dept of health is top drawer ! We are blessed with a small population so I think we can survive this well as long as we continue to follow the lead of our government

They do not want anyone that does not live there year round, in Rehoboth.

Zabe said...

If you do not live, year round, in Rehoboth, then do not go to Rehoboth.

Thank you for all your hard work and information to keep us safe. Hopefully we can all listen and be nice to each other.check on your neighbor...time to reflect!

If everyone stays home not going anywhere, I don't care if someone stays home in their beach house.

They only want the bottom line look at Middletown pack them in worry about everything later typical gov response.

Carney's trying to be politically correct here's what he meant people from N.Y and north stay there dont come here too late i'm down here seeing a lot of out of state tags guess from where NY New Jersey.

I think that the year round residents are more of an issue. Residents are not taking this serious. I went into Food Lion and a young couple were there with a toddler running around coughing. In our neighborhood one of our neighbors has two small children and one is only 2 months old. The other day was nice and I heard children running around laughing and playing so I took a look outside. The neighbor had guests over who also had three children too. They were there for a few hours running in and out of their house.

I work in Sussex county as a medical professional. People need to stay in their own state of residency. Each day as I travel to and from work on Seashore highway.I see numerous of out of state license plates. New Yorkers, Marylanders, Pennsylvania and even Connecticut. Headed to there summer homes. Not to mention the shopping they do once they are here.

Unknown said...

Too late they took the $$$$$$$ and ran

Unknown said...

Our federal government should impose full travel ban on all states ,should have been looked at months ago and we wouldnt have this .it would have passed by us

Unknown said...

Our state is for sure a day late and a dollar short on protecting us from oit of state ppl.nothing but nj ny va md plates ,ransacking our stores and spreading this to us .its all about politics and it's not going away any time soon

They're saying that they are already in Rehoboth, as they currently in a winter rental. Their question is......must they stay where they, per the governor's order or must they leave, per their lease agreement.

Unknown said...

I don't understand why we don't have an SIP in place here or did I miss something? I saw so many out of state license plates yesterday that it made me a little scared.

Like many, I have loved RBDE from afar for many years and look forward to my yearly vacation to your wonderful town. This, too, shall pass; we must stay safe and positive.

In reply to Rebel without a cause I have a 2nd home its totally empty, in Delaware not near a beach. Its out in the woods actually. Im from Pa.

Not to mention apparently getting your home remodeled during this time is apparently essential..smh
I work for a supplier and they tried implementing some precautions but customers dont care they still walk right up on us coughing and everything else...

Covid-19 dies not care what location you are in.

What part of "NO" do you not understand?

Rosa Slade said...

So we love out of towners when they're spending their money and boosting our economy, creating seasonal job opportunities, and patronizing small business. However, now that covid 19 is around "them damn notherners" are a problem. This is surreal. And quite frankly, ridiculous. People buy beach houses for the space, and the beach. No one wants to be quarantined in a place where everyone is on top of each other. And what Rhode Island is doing is akin to a witch hunt.

Very good Unknown, you are a rarity it seems.

I understand that the people from out of out of state will put added stress on our the medical services but also please keep in mind that it is also their taxes that support those same medical services.

Unknown said...

No, but our small hospitals do.

Unknown said...

Well I do. They will go to our stores possibly spreading the virus that they brought with them from a hot spot state. Stay where you live.

Anonymous said...

Since I can not come down to my second home, please tell me where I can send my tax bill to get a pro rata refund for the time that I am not allowed to use my home.

This is NOT vacation time, stay home. I guess some folks just don't care about spreading germs!
I have seen cars from Maryland, New York,New Jersey and Pennsylvania just to name a few.

Anonymous said...

seaming we can't use our home the tenants don't pay the rent for maybe three months does the state of Delaware or Rehoboth Beach give us a extension on our taxes

Anonymous said...

True on boosting thier economy but now no one is welcome.

Some of us from Delaware drive out of state company cars. Some of us are in the Essential business category.Just saying...

If you understand how fast and easy this virus spreads you would be concentrating on what the results are and why. All of the name calling and blaming is a waist of time. Approx. 80% of who gets the virus will have it go thru them rapidly with no side effects. The danger is that they will pass it on to where someone who can die from it is connected
Isolate folks and realize that we live in a small world today.

I am one of those “Pennsylvania people” who you may see periodically. Be careful generalizing- I came to my secondary residence the beginning of the month-before all of the restrictions were instituted. Hence, I am still here - protecting myself, YOU and people in Pennsylvania by sheltering in place. Comments are trivial, and should be taken as opinions, BUT, they can be hurtful, nonetheless. So, as many people above have stated- let’s just get through this, times are tough, let’s band together and be kind, even if it is short term, which seems to be the current climate.

Zabe- the person is a renter who lives in Rehoboth because nobody can afford a year round rental. The owners used to rent affordably for winter months, now winter rent is standard, even though jo s are not available. All landlords are evil.

I am sorry is it Code Red or Code Head. There are a lot of compromised immune systems in Rehobeth. I do not wish this on anybody but please follow the warnings. Stay where you are and self quarantine.

I live in delaware and I know people from here that knowingly went into maryland when the outbreak was peaking there and then the following weekend traveled down the east coast all the way to florida and back hitting every state in between. Now their grandmother is dying at the hospital because of their negligence. Wherever you are from wherever you are staying if we all just try to isolate for 14 days and maybe the grocery stores and the delaware government helps residents to have enough essentials for 2 weeks in order to stay home the virus would dissipate. Every state should do this and help Americans to get a grip
