A Viewer Writes: QUESTION ABOUT SALISBURY FIRE DEPARTMENT

So, the Salisbury Fire Department has put on their Facebook that they answered 13,830 calls the past year. I was kind of blown away.

I did the math, and that number equates to Salisbury Fire Department running approximately 38 calls a day. I don’t know what metrics were used to come up with such a number. That’s FAR off!

For example, in the last 24 hours, Salisbury Fire Department have been dispatched to approximately 20 calls. 38 calls a day never happens.

Puggy backing EMS CALLS to save there FF JOBS ... FACT.

Seriously? Have you nothing else to do than to nit pic at a time like this?

Anonymous said...

Obviously f.. ing there numbers just like SPD and SU.

Anonymous said...

Calls includes Phone Calls. Got to inflate the numbers for funding from the state.

20 calls on a day when 40% of people are at home and not on the road to have an accident, and are to scared to go to the hospital for any minor medical issue.

They probably count every single incoming and outgoing call placed.

Anonymous said...

oh it happens.why dont you get out from behind the keyboard and volunteer at your local fire dept.let me know how much sleep you get!

Anonymous said...

Maybe they meant that they answered 13,830 telephone calls.😏

Anonymous said...

Ambulance calls count as well

Anonymous said...

Paramedics are drunk at some calls. Fact.

Why is some busy body always trying to start $hit with the first responder agencies in Salisbury. Get a job, a life, or an addiction for Gods sake. But mind your own business loser.

Anonymous said...

Yeah...I agree with you. Its complete Bull. They are very poor liars. Those figures dont even make sense.

Anonymous said...

Calls of nature, calls for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They all add up.

Anonymous said...

Are you including EMS calls?

Anonymous said...

They have to put out propaganda to justify their over staffing, Always getting new equipment, all the riding around sightseeing etc. Again piss poor Administration of homeboys.

Anonymous said...

It's counted kind of like man hours. 13,830 calls mean that 13,830 people were dispatched, Example, 10 people dispatched to one incident equals 10 calls. 25 firefighters/EMT to 2 incidents equals 25 calls.

Remember a few years ago they barely had any fires now there’s 58.

I see there snobby asses men and women come in Acme to get there lunch with big ass radios hanging on them just waiting for someone to tell how much of a hero they are.

Probably phone calls from wives checking on husbands...

I was just wondering what ever happened to the fireman that was run over by the fire truck that was putting those blue reflectors out last year to mark fire hydrants. Never heard much more about it.

Anonymous said...

Ever notice when a fire department responds to a non-fire medical emergency? Are you just running out of ideas sitting in quarantine?

Anonymous said...

Right out of Jake Day's play book. He's a big supporter of the FD and they (including Day) have to justify using a state grant to hire 24 new FD people and get rid of the volunteers.

Those their like Davis went to public high school

they dont comprehend math

Anonymous said...

Why does this bother you?

Anonymous said...

They pad their calls by running a truck or engine on EMS calls so it counts as two calls. Gets numbers up for federal funding and ego boost for how busy they are

Anonymous said...

They've got to justify their jobs so Tull can stay in the click with Day and they can load up 5 or 6 and go to lunch in a million dollar fire truck. A better equation would be how much does that cost the town and does ego equal effectiveness?

Anonymous said...

When a loved one dies because the EMT was busy and they can't sent a trained fire fighter you will change your attitude.

Typical of the fire service most everywhere,it’s all about THEM!

Paramedic touched my breasts and squeezed them a couple of times when I was on the stretcher. I reported him but nothing got done!

How many lives have you 6:25, saved by going in a burning structure and bringing them out across you shoulder?? Your really not a hero until you've done something heroic.

That's because you're a guy

Always the “scare tactics”. Seriously, that’s your “go to” every..single...time. Give it up.

Let me guess, some Douche Bag that thinks it's Ok for John Tull, Rick Hoppes, Ret., and Jake Day to continue to rape the city and county taxpayers when we all know that the Salisbury Fire Department doesn't need all of those paid Farmin!

I have a feeling that you get a pay check from them!

Anonymous said...

And I have a feelin’ you carrying a grudge.

About as many as you have. Quit acting like you save lives by carrying people out of burning buildings. Oh...there are many artistic renderings of that image but the truth is...you’ve never done it and it RARELY happens. Typical firefighter...playing on emotions. By the way...it’s “you’re really not a hero”. “You’re” is a contraction for “you are”. Also, it’s “your” shoulder. Not “you shoulder”. I love how you fire clowns show just how stupid you really are.

It's all about running off the volunteer firemen and securing their paid fire jobs.

Anonymous said...

These fire clowns assigned to the fire trucks are self dispatching and themselves on most ambulance calls.

The same fire clowns are dispatching themselves on an automatic fire alarm in a home or a business. When a station like station 1 is dispatched to Salisbury Nursing Home they respond in Engine 1 and then the Assistant Cheif 1 responds. Then Truck 2 automatically self dispatches. None of these fire apparatus has been dispatched but Engine 1. This is how they justify paid fire jobs and run up the total numbers.

Note to anyone getting involved in an MVC with a fire truck, a chiefs car or an ambulance, you make sure you get the tape and documentation from the 911 center and get all of their call run sheets and all documents. There is a high probability that you have a good case and you will win. I did.

It's a Federal grant and that is a big difference.

The reality is that the Salisbury Fire Department has hired at least 24 paid firemen in the last 5 years. That's not including the older ones they ran off and/or forced to retire.

How can you justify 24 paid fireman for only 58 "reported working fires" in a year?? You can't but no one is saying anything. What happened to the volunteers at Station 2 and the volunteers at Station 1? Jake Day, Rick Hoppes, John Tull, Darrin Scott, Jimmy Gladwell, etc. ran off so they could justify hiring more paid firemen.

Jake Day hates volunteer firemen, especially the ones in the county.

That fire department is loaded with a bunch of kids playing paid fireman with absolutely no experience. I don't want them coming to my house.

Anonymous said...

I’ll remember that when your house is on fire!

Anonymous said...

I don’t want them coming to my house either. That’s what I pay insurance for. Let it burn to the ground. I’ll rebuild with my insurance money. Don’t come in and try to save anything at all. It will just have smoke and water damage. Let it burn to the ground. I’ll rebuild. Don’t give the insurance companies anything to argue over or to try to wriggle out of paying. If it burns to the ground...they can’t try to stiff me or nickel and dime me to death.

I'm not a fireman 8:39 and 2:18, just simply stated that a fireman is not a hero until they have done something heroic. From where did you get the notion that I am a firefighter. Honestly I think first responders have had a swelled head since 911. Oh and thanks for correcting my spelling, that's very important.

Anonymous said...

Don't volunteer at fire department that has paid members. You will be doing all the grunt work

Anonymous said...

Ooops, yes federal grant. When he got this grant the fed pays for the first 3 years (I believe, might be 4) of salaries for these 24 FD people. Afterwards, Salisbury has to pay the salaries and MUST keep 12 of those hires. He could lay off 12, in other words. This is the reason for this fabrication. He doesn't want to lay anyone off (also, the FD Dept. is a voting block of his). The problem is that he created this problem, if we kept the volunteers we wouldn't have to pay for any of the 24. Now he is attempting to weasel his way out. It is really that simple. Hint: The 13 story building comes into play with this too.

Those are the facts. Period! Believe me, I know.

Volunteer firemen are a dying breed. It's not just Salisbury, it's a nationwide problem. You can listen to the county radio any day you want and hear call after call being re-alerted. It's not the 1980's anymore where you could just show up to a fire station and they give you a set of gear, a few hours of training and you're off to the races. People have jobs, families and responsibilities that they need to take care of. I'm not sure of the exact hours of training required to become a firefighter, but I believe it's around 150-200 hours (and that's just the minimum). It's becoming too much of a burden to complete all the training and still try to maintain your daily life. And you're asking people to do all of this for free don't forget. I think many people like the idea of volunteering but ultimately decide it's just not worth it.
Also, I think another problem is that the youth today don't have the work ethic or motivation to get up and do something. Back in the day it was honorable to serve your community and people took pride in it and looked forward to doing it. This generation is all about "what can you do for me"?
I do think that the volunteers would help themselves a lot by having people actually in the station to respond to calls. When the public calls 911 they shouldn't have to wait for you to drive from your house to the station and then respond to their emergency. By the time all that happens the situation is usually irreversible whether it be fire or medical. But then again we get back to the problem of asking people to dedicate time that they probably don't have.
I don't necessarily think that the volunteers are being "run off". I think it's more of that the older generation that kept the volunteer organizations running is slowly dwindling away and the younger generation isn't willing to put in the effort or have the motivation. As the population gets bigger and bigger then inevitably the calls to 911 increase which puts an even bigger strain on the volunteer organizations. I wouldn't be surprised if in another 15-20 years the whole county doesn't have paid firefighters or at least the stations surrounding Salisbury.

Your second sentence should end with a question mark since you are asking a question. You’re showing your firefighter education.

Letter To The Editor

Dear Editor,

Don't know if you are aware of this or not but nepotism is real in the Salisbury Fire Department. Did you know that Fire Chief John Tull hired his own son for a paid firemen's job? No shame in his game.

Deputy Chief Darrin Scott hired his son and his grandbaby daddy.

Former Fire Chief Rick Hoppes hired his nephew. Not sure if he hired any offspring. Maybe someone can confirm?

This is disgusting and unethical. Shame on you John Tull and Jake Day!

I'm not a firefighter or a spelling and grammar checker but I did sleep at Holiday Inn Express one night?
There's the question mark your were looking for 12:15. Lol
And I'm still not a firefighter or first responder of any type. Keep guessing or keep cheering, seems as that's what you do best.

You paid firemen are getting better every day trying to justify your jobs. Volunteers don't have to be a dying breed and all the mandatory training isn't necessary either. Just another way to "run off" some people from volunteering.

That's right. Paid firemen are the laziest people. They love to get paid to sleep on the job.

Anonymous said...

You know the best way to run off a bunch of paid firemen in da Ghetto'bury? Do away with the 24-hour shift and make them work rotating 8 hours Dupont Shifts without any sleep time on the job.

8am - 4pm, 4pm - 12am and 12am - 8am

That is the best shift to get some actual work out of them.
