A Colorado high school student forfeited the state tournament match rather than wrestle a girl during the match.
Brendan Johnston, 18, a senior at the Classical Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., forfeited his match against Jaslynn Gallegos, a senior at Skyview High in the first round of the tournament on Thursday, February 21, KDVR reported.
A few days later on Saturday, February 23, he forfeited the match against Angel Rios, a junior at Valley High, in the third-round consolation match, ending his high school wrestling career.
The student cited his religious and personal beliefs for forfeiting the matches.
“It’s so physical … physically close. I don’t think that’s really appropriate with a young lady. It’s also very aggressive and I’m not really, I guess, comfortable with that,” Johnston told KDVR.

No, I wouldn't have wrestled either. With this day and age, the kid would always wonder if the girls would pull out the victim card and claim some BS "he touched me inappropriately." What a snowball that could be. Kid saved himself a lot of potential headaches by not putting himself in this situation. Reading the article, he also states that wrestling is something he does, and not what he is, so he is smart to know there is more to life than sports.
He understands wrestling. He knows for a fact he out weighs them and is much larger than them. He would have had to hold back or he would have hurt them very badly. He made the correct decision in refusing to go against some one from lower weight classes. He also could not treat a girl in the manner that would have been required in a match. Cheers me to see that he was raised in a proper way on the treatment and respect for a woman.
Good for him.
My sons also declined to wrestle females.
If I was a teenage boy, I would’ve jumped at this opportunity. My hands would’ve been all over the place, and she would’ve had a smile on her face the entire time.
Its his choice either way.I personally would not have sacrificed my training, my time or my effort.
If he claims that "wrestling is something we do and not who we are", it says a lot about his competitive nature. Wrestling rewards aggression. There is nothing that would have kept me from competing unless by injury.
He is a gentleman and like mentioned above, could have ended up being charged by some nut job looking for dollars. Of course it is not the students fault they are put in this position. It is the adult administration and government. Shows the younger are smarter, bet they are not going green or looking for entitlements either. Good to see smart thinking youth's that can stand on their feet.
Good for him, glad to see this.
Matches are based on weight classes. This fella had already lost and was in conciliation rounds. I reckon he was scared he’d lose to a girl in front of his friends.
Exactly. I would have felt her up and down. She'd think twice about furthering her wrestling career.
Smart choice there
Not worth it one bit
this crap needs to stop ..stay in your assinged lane/genes for ALL SPORTS..
Good to see there's still some kids out there with some common sense values. Keep it up buddy!
Lol. Scared he would get beat by a girl.
No scared 9:34, smart enough to see the possibility being found guilty of a sex offense and having to register as a sex offender wherever he decides to live. His future could be ruined for the rest of his life
