Red Flag Law, Universal Background Checks Fail to Stop Illinois Shooting

A red flag law and universal background checks failed to stop the Aurora, Illinois, shooting that killed five people Friday.

Illinois also licenses all gun owners, but gun control was impotent to stop the shooting.

The Chicago Tribune reports that 45-year-old Gary Martin opened fire at Henry Pratt Company around 1:20 pm. He allegedly fatally wounded five individuals, then exchanged fire with officers before being killed during a shootout.

WBEZ radio reports that Martin’s sister said he was laid off two weeks ago and was “very depressed.”

WRSP reports that Illinois’ red flag law went into effect on January 1, 2019.

His gun permit card was revoked and he was to have voluntarily turned in his gun, more than a couple of years ago. When he didnt voluntarily turn it in, there was no follow-up (is there even a provision in the law for follow-up?) And as a true criminal he didnt follow the law and now 5 innocent people are dead. My biggest fear as a manager was that some who was fired would come back to harm someone. Our offices all had windows onto the street and I actually 3cpected a car to come through the window after 1 termination. I sat in on 2 terminations in one day.
