Trader Joe's employee, who died in hostage situation, killed by LAPD gunfire, chief says

A bullet fired by the LAPD killed the Trader Joe’s employee who died during a hostage situation during the weekend, Chief Michael Moore said Tuesday at a news conference.

Ballistics tests show that a Los Angeles police officer fired the shot that struck and killed Melyda Corado, 27, during a shootout with an alleged hostage taker at the Silver Lake supermarket Saturday, Moore said.

Gene Evin Atkins, 28, was arrested on suspicion of murder after Corado died during the more than two-hour hostage situation before Moore revealed it was officer gunfire that killed Corado.

Atkins was being held on $2 million bail, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said. Atkins allegedly shot his grandmother seven times and wounded another woman about two hours before the incident at the Trader Joe’s.

After shooting the women, Atkins drove to the supermarket, crashed his vehicle into a pole and ran inside the store, officials said. He's accused of barricading himself inside and holding dozens of employees and customers hostage.

The standoff ended when Atkins agreed to handcuff himself and walked out the front door, surrounded by four of the hostages. He was injured when he was taken into custody, police said.

Atkins is facing several other charges, Moore said.

Yeah because cops are so gung-hoe about shooting first and asking questions last!!!! Just like that shooting that happened in New York at the Statute of Liberty, everyone who was shot, was shot by police trying to shoot at a suspect who wasn't even shooting... Hell, I don't think he even had a gun, but I could be wrong on that part...

But as usual who cares, no cop will go to jail for any wrong doing ever, and if you file a complaint or try to push back to get the cop fired or jailed, they will retaliate and make up false charges to get you on!!! So why even talk about it anymore!!!! Just get to the point where its an eye for an eye and we shoot back... Then maybe the cops will care, then maybe the politicians will care, and then maybe you all dumb asses will care too...

Maybe when your life is in jeopardy, you will finally see how nonsensical this all is and maybe start to care about others then???? My guess is you still would't...

Yeah of course he was injured, becasue cops don't care if you are already in cuffs or not, they beat the crap out of him, and I bet you they claim self defense or they were scared pussies or better yet, he was resisting arrest while already arrested!!!!!

why blame the kops when it's the politicians that pull the strings?

Your comment doesn't hold water anymore but keep saying it if it makes you feel better. You should probably buy a tv and spell check.

The LEO are trained and practice/qualify with duty weapons. What do you think will happen if teachers with minimal training are armed with guns in schools?

Wrong place at the wrong time. Nobody's fault.

Trained and practice, huh?

Is that why they need 16 rounds to hit something once or twice??

Is that why they roll up on kids with BB guns and air soft rifles and think it's an AR-15? THEN, do the 16 round spray and pray?
Because they walk in fear, live in fear, and act impulsively out of fear.
Just like the cops in Salisbury who opened up on a SUV with automatic rifle fire IN THE MIDDLE OF TOWN, you have to know what you are shooting at (and actually have the talent to HIT IT), but know what's down range, too. You or I fire a SINGLE SHOT from a rifle in the middle of town and we go straight to jail and might do prison time. Empty an clip and wear a badge? Home for dinner.
"Wrong place wrong time" should NEVER NEVER be the reason a cop kills an innocent citizen. Whoever pulled the trigger on that fatal shot? THAT'S who's fault it is.....
I'm sure that guy's family is comforted by the comment, 10:49.

Again your comment doesn't hold water in 2018. Cops are getting indicted for J walking. YOU WILL NEVER face a decision to shoot or not shoot situation. YOU HAVE NEVER faced this situation. Send MONEY to the family through donations... however YOU won't do that either!! I'll be protecting and serving soon and YOU will be home sitting in your chair drinking watching CNN and telling your wife what a bad @ss you are. Ha. Have a nice day thanks for reading!

I believe a whole lot of us will be facing that decision soon.
Argue the facts. Crying doesn't win an argument.
Did a cop shoot an innocent citizen or not?
Finally, if it's a kid with a suspected weapon, I'm falling on the side of "not shooting".
Of course, I don't walk around afraid of everything, either.
Didn't mean to hurt your feelings, boy.

Of course the hostage was an innocent victim. The one in the wrong, the one that put her in that horrible situation, was the hostage taker. For all you cop haters, it was not the cops fault. The cops were TRYING to save lives, not end them (except for the hostage taker's life). "Being in the wrong place at the wrong time" is just saying that the hostage had no say in what happened to her, and there was nothing she could do to change her fate. If not killed by a cop's bullet, she was going to be killed by the hostage taker.

I have the gun that most cops carry, and no matter how many times I practice with it, it is not a highly accurate weapon. Unless a cop is using a sniper rifle, there is always the possibility of collateral damage. Cops have to make a risk assessment every time they pull out their weapon. In this case, they determined the hostage was going to die without their intervention. It was a bad outcome, but that was the hostage takers fault, not the cops. I wouldn't want their job.

Go ahead and shoot at cops. You will find out they are better armed, and better shots than you are. You are all talk, and a coward. Get on the ground and crawl to them when they tell you, or you likely will be shot. Or "shoot back" and be killed. Many cops are "gung-ho" about pulling their weapons, but not many want to pull the trigger. For a cop, justified or not, pulling the trigger can be a career ender, or worse. I can't believe cops all are just waiting for the opportunity to shoot someone. Those people are in the military.

The assumption that "he was going to be killed by the hostage taker" is just that. But it SOUNDS reasonable as a justification for killing an innocent man.
I am pretty sure that just about every police department has what they call"hostage negotiators" or such.
AND, not everyone who challenges or questions their actions is a cop hater.
For the record, and for the ones who have short attention spans, I'm GLAD we have the police. I'm HAPPY there are men and women who want to shoulder the heavy work to make society functional.
Without them, the rest of us would be using a lot more ammo than we could afford and would NEVER get any sleep.
Thank you.
What I rail against is the macho, WE ARE THE POLICE!!!, over-the-top violent, trigger happy cops who can't wait to show their employers (hint: it AIN'T the Police Chief or the Mayor) how bad ass they are....you know, the ones you can see by the THOUSANDS on YouTube pulling old ladies through the car window and body slamming them into concrete for SAYING something they didn't like. Punching suspects in the face while they are HANDCUFFED. Gang beating people into the hospital.
Again, call me crazy for wondering what part of the manual they find THAT in....
And to 11:24, you have NO IDEA what I've done or seen or have had happen to me.
"Soon to be", huh? Which means, I've most certainly seen and done things you can't imagine. Ever been in a room with 5-6 people and someone is, out of the blue, shot for saying the wrong thing? EVERYONE pulls a gun and it gets a bit touchy. You'd wet your pants, "soon to be" Mr. Bad Ass. Running was not an option. Anyone running is shot right away.
Have you EVER been in a fight at all? I've been in dozens of 'em.
Keep your sissy little admonitions to yourself. You got no clue.

It was sad the worker was killed, but in cases like this

The bad guy gets the time

I agree in part.,..some folks with a badge are gun ho ....

But once a bullet leaves that barrel...it can travel anywhere..

Just pray for the family affected

And think if you were that officer....how would you feel

knowing your round killed someone innocent?

Pray for that officer too
