Resort Officials Call Route 90 Dualization ‘Critical’ For Public Safety

SNOW HILL – The Town of Ocean City came before the Worcester County Commissioners and state highway officials this week to make a case for prioritizing the dualization of Route 90.

On Tuesday, Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan and other resort officials appeared before the commissioners following an annual visit from the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) to request the dualization of Route 90 be placed at the top of the county’s priority list.

For years, Ocean City officials have advocated for expanding the highway and its bridges from two lanes to four to facilitate the flow of traffic both entering and exiting the resort.

Meehan said the dualization would address public safety concerns along Route 90.

Seems Delegate Carozza was loud/clear when she said Route 113 has left the county at a "crossroads" for future projects.

In other words, Worchester you got dual lane Route 113. Now Maryland needs to addresses other counties and their issues. I'll try to work with you, but know full well you got Route 113 done, it'll prob be slim pickins for the foreseeable future!

Whats left? Decrepit Route 50 bridge, the widening of Route 589 promise because of the casino and a additional Route 90 bridge. Thhe Route 90 bridge(S) with an S at the end since there are Two one lane bridges, will cost BIG BIG money; Route 50 bridge replacement/relocation BIG BIG money; and the "promise" of lane expansion for Route 589 BIG money.

Sounds like a BIG BIG mess with little funding available anytime soon! Whats the plan now City FAIL?

let worcester pay for it! lowest piggyback tax rate in the state! give me a freakin break!

Might be a "safety" factor to dualize but it would be more cost effective to install speed cameras with stiff fines. They drive that stretch of road like it was a race track. Dualization would only create more problems along coastal highway and also on 50W when these idiots leave and reenter 50W. There is no common sense being used in this matter. Will OC pay for it or the tax payer going to be stuck with the cost.

That won't happen ...Costs too much and involves taking
land......
More needed is > a Bypass Road (LIKE DOVER, DEL HAS)
Around Easton, Cambridge , Salisbury (charge a Toll to pay
for them, Like Dover, Del does) along RT 50 !!!!!

I wouldnt exactly call a bottleneck on coastal highway "public safety"

Add lanes to RT 90 so more people can sit in traffic waiting to get in town. Sounds stupid to me.

A bigger/wider bridge will get the cars to OC faster but, where will they park? The town does little to promote the Park & Ride lot. In fact, they run as little as a single bus.

They need to keep their focus on completing the dualization of RT 113, before they start "prioritizing" the dualization of RT 90. With the addition of the guardrail between the lanes on RT90, the risk of head on collisions was virtually eliminated. Rt 113 should come first!

Super highway to a parking lot.As long as I have been alive the tax payers have been financing it.

OC Not big enough for the traffic Now, Not Happening !! LOL

You know 1045, that's a very good point. That park/ride lot sits EMPTY most of the time. I'm sure you put all the brains together in City FAIL and they still won't remember that its there except for Sun/Springfest. Geez.

One good thing about the traffic that sits on Route 90 at Coastal Highway - instead of an empty JRs restaurant to look at, the bright yellow/red color of DENNY's will be the new "eye candy" entering our town!!!!

(sarcasm crushed!)

Just put cement dividers between the lanes. They can use the ones from the Salisbury bypass when & IF it is finished..

The lowest piggy back tax is somerset county.

people like you,..smh. Just help the state keep oppressing us. you can give up your own rights all you want but leave mine alone. and get out of the left lane, I know you are one of those types. freaking busybody. and i bet you're one of those that shout "personal responsibility" yet you want the state into every aspect of your life telling you what to do, when to do it, how to do it and for how long.

stay your ass home and close your curtains.

How about enforcement of speed limit on the 50 bridge? That could be a goldmine. Build a little schoolhouse just across the bridge and put speed cameras there to feed the hungry OC budget!😋

How about RAISING the archaic speed limits, that nobody obeys in the first place? (including cops) People speed because they want to and they can. They have no respect for speed limits that are not reasonable, practical, and just speed traps to generate revenue for the gov't.

If police wanted to slow people down they would be in plain sight so people would VOLUNTARILY slow down, not hide anywhere and everywhere to "catch speeders".

Anytime the state wants to impose their will, all they have to do is tack the word "safety" on whatever they propose to do and it's a go.

Just like the feds who put the words "national security" on anything they want to do. Then it becomes a big deal and MUST be allowed.

The gov't nor the police care about you. They want your money. End of story.

Maryland law only authorizes speed cameras in work and school zones & nowhere else. They can't just be used anywhere, willy-nilly. Forget that idea.

12:23 You are on here telling others off when you are telling everyone you are one of the problem drivers that drive aggressive and only think of yourself. I am not passing judgement but from your comment you are a pure big money / driving "Moron".

How in the world, (this one) did you ever come to the conclusion I was an aggressive driver? Because I told someone to stay out of the left lane? The ones who camp out in the left lane ARE the aggressive ones jackass. In many states it is illegal to remain in the left lane if not passing, and other states have or in the process of making it illegal.

And I bet you are one of them since it seems to hit a nerve with you. I really hope you drive better than you assume.

Help the city people get to the beach for summer fun faster, while continuing to let local people die on RT 113 year round. Yeah, go ahead and "prioritize." I hope the commissioners can keep the county priorities straight, and not let OC money making priorities take precedence over county life and death ones.

Somerset County has the highest piggyback tax rate and we continually get the shaft from our officials. Due to inept leaders that have sacrificed us to industrial solar and importing chicken manure from other eastern shore counties. Southern and eastern Somerset property values decrease, while nearby counties increase. Hallelujah, the reign of terror will be over soon. Byebye Rex, bye Jerry, bye Randy. Don't come back now, ya hear!

I hope you understand that "your kind" and the attitude that you express, is exactly how an aggressive driver thinks. You want people to "get out of YOUR way" even when they ARE passing another vehicle. You will tailgate the "offending" driver that is hindering your excessive speeding and reckless driving. Smell my exhaust dude.
