A Viewer Writes: Salisbury Fire Boat

As of this afternoon the Salisbury fire boat was still in the Sea Mark boatyard in Crisfield. I don't know how long it's been there but the storage alone is approximately $45 per day.

There fitting it with trash nets for the Ireton River.

Just why in the devil do we need a fire boat if it's going to sit in a boatyard doing nothing? Never needed one before, but I guess this city would rather pay for something to sit than sell the stupid thing.

$45 X 60 days is $2700.00 in storage so far. How much for the actual repairs? I thought this turkey was supposed to be no cost to Salisbury taxpayers.

If the government says " no cost to tax payers" dig deep for upkeep and repair!

4105483120. Call the Chiefs office and ask them.

How the hell can you justify a fire boat? How many calls have they used this craft on? How say you Westside with your fire boat also ? How many calls have you been on West side fire dept. and how much does it cost to maintain ? Same quest for the Bury. Next thing you know they will be opening a daycare center, or a sandwich shop.

Jake, care to be transparent and elaborate?

it was just another "fire truck" to take to OC once a year.

Joe I have been giving this subject a lot of thought and I think you should weigh in on it.

Do you think the Fire Chief and the Police Chief of Municipalities such as Salisbury should be elected positions?

If the fire chief and the police chief are both elected by the voters, citizens of Salisbury, then they would be held accountable to the citizens and not lame mayors like Jake Day, Jim Ireton and Barrie Tilghman.

An elected fire chief and police chief will be required by law to have residency in the municipality where they are elected the entire time.

If the fire chief and police chief are elected by the citizens then they have to be a resident of the city at least 1 year prior to filing as a candidate.

If the fire chief and the police chief are elected by the citizens and not the fire fighters or police officers then they would be held accountable to the citizens and not the lame Mayor's and Councils.

The the fire chief and police chief are elected by the citizens in most of Louisiana I just read. Places that allow elected fire and police chiefs allow the candidates to be non certified, but they are required to get their certifications within 2 years.

If the fire chief and police chief are elected they would be held accountable to the tax payers meaning they wouldn't be wasting our hard earned tax dollars on junk like the S.S. Hoppes.

In most places a new mayor and council means new department heads anyway meaning you get a new police chief and fire chief when they are appointed vs. elected.

I can support a resident/citizen elected fire chief and police chief.

that's cause they are fixin to slap those 24k gold leaf "Big Boyz Toyz" slogans all over it.

Can't do that here.

I live in Crisfield and will still give the city of Salisbury 10K for it

Put it up for auction and give the money back to the taxpayers of Salisbury. They only thing it is good for is sludge patrol for the floaters in the Wicomico River from the failed waste water treatment plant.

Anonymous said...

Has it ever been used??? I mean, to put out a fire?

Anonymous said...

Truth is they are converting the engines to run on untreated human waste. This will work wonders since the now $400,000,000.00 sewer plant still doesn't work!

2:08 While your idea has merritt if you look closely at your remarks the answer is there.

You state that these Chief would be held accountable by the citizens and not the lame Mayor.

The fact that we have a lame mayor to begin with is because the majority of people who vote in Salisbury are uneducated and extremely uninformed. Remember Jake was elected without even a challenger.

So considering that the voters keep putting unqualified people in office as Mayor it would only stand to reason that they would do the same with a police or fire chief.

Bottom line the citizens of Salisbury are their own worse enemy.

I recall SJD warning the council it was a hole in the water that money goes. Wasn't it Gary Comegy's that said it wouldn't cost the taxpayer a dime because it was purchased with "grant" money.

Anonymous said...

Man that boat is really swimming in cash for the taxpayers.

Anonymous said...

2:08 PM It would make no difference. The system is rigged and Ghettobury's elite will ensure they get elected who they want in each position.

How is that whole Day thing working out? He was technically elected. City council- elected.

Again, who really cares.

iDIOTS! aND WE HAVE TO PAY FOR IT!

Another broken toy.

"Has it ever been used??? I mean, to put out a fire?"

NO.

Anonymous said...

If it was really needed it would not be sitting on land for several months. Just common sense.

2:08,

If the idiots in da bury don't elect diligent mayors and council members, why would they elect a diligent fire chief or police chief?

"Has it ever been used??? I mean, to put out a fire?"

NO.

And neither had the original one that kept sinking at the dock from lack of use.

We don't need a fire boat, period. Get rid of it, the paid firefighters, and the Mayor/City Council. Make it all Wicomico County and be done with this disaster.

I, for one, remember the exit polls with Albero over Day 2:1 and the votes getting switched.

There's too much corruption in the City government to go in and try to fix it. It's just too far gone and needs to be eliminated in its entirety.

This is without a doubt the biggest waste of tax payer monies I've seen. Yes, the FED paid for it, but still has to be maintained, fuel, insurance, etc. with local tax $. BTW, how many fires has it responded too? Typical liberal thinking, if we don't take, we'll lose the funding.

Anonymous said...

Don't worry about the cost. They'll give them a fire engine in trade.

Anonymous said...

This is proof that Salisbury doesn't need a fire boat. Obviously it wasn't needed and there wasn't a back up.

S.S. Hoppes... Another Rape of he tax payers by Richard A. Hoppes, BS, Chief of the Department and Jake Day, Jim Ireton and the City Council.

I agree with this comment 100%.

There should be no fire service agreement and the Salisbury Fire Department should be the Wicomico County Fire Department.

Another excellent idea. This should be a Comment Worthy of a Post and see what the voters have to say about this. Let's do a poll.

Or maybe put one of those $4,500 Maryland flag grills on it just like they did at Station 2 on their fire fire trucks.

Joe did you know that Rick Hoppes spent $9,000 of the County funding to buy 2 new grills to put on Truck 2 and Engine 2? One grill was of the American Flag and the other grill was of the Maryland flag and they cost $4,500 each and they were not needed. Hoppes did it to make the volunteers feel good and Camaraderie. It had nothing to do with Camaraderie, they just wanted to spend the county funding.

"BTW, how many fires has it responded too?"

NONE!! It has responded to absolutely NO FIRES!!

This Far Bote has been in service for 5 1/2 years and it has yet to respond to a fire.

I guess in 4 1/2 years Salisbury Liberals will want to be replacing the fire boat just like they did the 2 engines at Station 16. Engines 16 and 16-1 were just replaced after 10 years of service and they weren't even broken in yet.

New Salisbury Fire Boat Debuts
Posted: Apr 30, 2012 7:15 PM EDT

SALISBURY, Md.- When your phone gets old, you replace it. When your shoes wear, you buy a new pair. For the Salisbury Fire Department, it wasn't that easy. For years, the department worked to replace its aging fire boat. Monday, it finally arrived.

The Homeland Security Grant was awarded back in 2009, covering the total cost of the boat. It was built by MetalCraft Marine in New York and now, the 36-foot fire rescue rapid response vessel is in Salisbury, gearing up for service.

It took some watching and waiting but just after 2:30 Monday afternoon, the wait was finally over.

The Firestorm 36, a rapid response vessel with chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear defense options, took its first ride down the Wicomico River and made its big debut at the Port of Salisbury.

"I think it's awesome," said Jane Youngk, who docks at the port. "I think the city really needs something. I think the river is very important to the city and the community and I think it's great."

The fire department thinks so, too.

"This boat is a thousand percent better than our old model," explained Salisbury firefighter Brad Berg. "Our old model was actually an old, refurbished fishing boat. It didn't do the job at all that we needed it to do. It was extremely difficult to use for rescues, for dives or any of that kind of stuff."

But it will be a lot easier now, with state of the art technology; something project manager Eric Connell can vouch for.

"Traditionally, firefighting on the water was done by tugboats and they traveled slowly and supply a whole lot of water. Our approach is that we travel really fast and supply a lot of water as well," Connell explained. "You know, if you get there in time you can put a fire out with a bucket of water if you're there in time so we want to be fast and be there and be effective."

The new fire boat will not go into service for another week or two, as Salisbury firefighters need to finish up their training.
