Fake eclipse glasses will likely be worn by many when millions of Americans turn their faces skyward to see the first coast-to-coast total solar eclipse in a century. Knockoffs of specially designed protective eyewear for staring at the sun are flooding the U.S. market.
Experts cautioned the public to stay clear of unsafe counterfeits, Reuters reported.
Even as makers of certified, safety-tested solar eye ware rushed to meet surging demand before the Aug. 21 eclipse, they have joined astronomers and optometrists in warning of defective knockoffs.
"It's a bunch of unscrupulous people cashing in on the eclipse and putting public safety at risk," said Richard Fienberg, press officer for the American Astronomical Society.

Around our parts, roughly 80% of the sun will be blocked SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO day will not turn into night like most think. If its a clear day, it will feel like a cloud has move over the sun that's all. We may see a bright star or two - but the sky will not get dark like nighttime...need to head to SC to get the full effect.
Still worth drinking for!!!!! Aug 21 between 1-4pm.
I think I'll wait for the video.
Going to Nashville, TN. Huge party and total eclipse. Bonus Hattie B's hot chicken!!!
Yeah, I remember another total eclipse in about 1977. It was cloudy and rainy and nobody saw nothing. Same thing could happen this year.
Wrap your sunglasses in aluminum foil and that will give the right amount of protection
