Restoring power to Hatteras, Ocracoke could take 1 to 2 weeks

CAPE HATTERAS, N.C. (WVEC) -- The Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative said Sunday that power restoration to Hatteras Island and Ocracoke Island could take one to two weeks as it considers two options to get electricity back to customers.

The co-op determined all cables transmitting power to the islands were compromised when a contractor accidentally drove a steel casing through the underground cables on July 27.

PCL Construction, CHEC, and New River Construction, the cooperative’s transmission contractor, excavated the site of the damaged cables that are part of CHEC's transmission system under the south side of the Bonner Bridge.

Crews exposed one of the cables and saw that it was completely severed. The cooperative ran ran tests Saturday to check the integrity of the other two cables and found issues with them.

I hope they have the National Guard there to protect their homes from Vandalism until its finished, and the company who hired this crew should pay for everything.

Take note....it is just that easy to take down whole areas at a time weather it be physically or by digital means. Very hard to swallow.

Two to three weeks??? Well...there goes the summer.

This is a terrible event for the islands.
The contractor should pay for all of the repair plus compensate the businesses and people for their loss of power.
However, the contractor's insurance company will make sure no reparations are paid.
That is their job. Make sure that those who are damaged receive no compensation.
That is the primary objective for insurance companies.

Imagine this occurring in Ocean City at this time of the season. Imagine how many businesses would fold, never to recover.
Very sad situation down there in the beautiful OBX.

My husband is on the repair crew for NRC and said usually they can have a transmission line repaired in 2 days but the trench box has been leaking quite a bit making it unsafe. They will probably have an overhead line hooked up by Friday and power restored while they repair the damaged underground lines, that's what could take up to 2 weeks. But power should be back on by the weekend.

Miss Utility Who? Will the renters get back their prepaid vacations? I doubt it. The landlords are not responsible for it and how will they pay it. A lot of lost deposits! Insurance companies will likely not pay out under typical storm evacuation policies. What a cluster ----!

We called 811, but the paint lines moved out with the tide...

I can hear it now. You or I would be held liable for every penny.

Hard to believe all the engineers who work on that project didn't know those lines were there.
