Maryland to check bridges to avoid repeat of Georgia fire, road collapse

After fire destroyed a key highway link in Atlanta, Maryland officials have decided that they were not going to let it happen here.

The state’s Department of Transportation said Tuesday that it is identifying and relocating any flammable material that may be under a state-owned bridge.

The department “is doing everything we can to protect the safety of Marylanders as they use our road network ,” state tramsportation secretary Pete K. Rahn said.
