Rodents eating away at car wiring, costing consumers

It's frustrating when you try and start your car, but can't because of damage to the car's wiring. It happens frequently, and it costs consumers a lot of money to fix.

The 11 News I-Team uncovers the furry culprit -- and the stand some consumers are taking against a car maker.

June Wotring has owned many Toyotas. She found them reliable, so it surprised her when the Highlander she has had for little more than a year started acting up.

"The track light and the engine light came on, and it was real sluggish," Wotring said.

Wotring took her SUV to the dealership, where the service department told her what the culprit was.

"They said a rodent had chewed the wires, and they showed me in the engine where they chewed it, and you could see the rodent feces," Wotring said.

This is a complete true story....as a 30 year tech i can't tell you how many times I've done wire harness repairs....it can be very costly....and is nearly impossible to prevent...

I used to work at a company that coated the extruded copper wire for the automotive industry. We made it for everyone, you know why the rodents eat the wire? It is because we make the wire coating out of a soybean mix with some plastic added. It is food to them. If you want to keep them out of the engine compartment, lay Mothballs around the top of the motor in spots they won't roll off.

Rodents will eat the wires, they will make nests inside the air cleaner assembly. They can climb up the evaporator drain hose and into the heater case and make nests. Spiders make nests inside the evaporative canister vent hose.
To blame this on the car manufacturer is just a shakedown by a slimy lawyer.
The real root of the problem is that the owner of the car has a rodent problem.
What should the car makers do? Make the wiring poisonous?

This is an across the board problem in the auto industry. Our daughters vehicle fell prey to the same thing(its NOT a Toyota)and was lucky it did not cost her a fortune.

Damn near made my dog crazy, always barking at the car when it was sitting. Nest in air intake and chewed up wiring.

The rodent problem is not with the car. It's where it is parked (or stored). Get rid of the rodents where the car is parked and stored, and there won't be any problem with them in the car.

Keep killing all the black snakes and you will have more rodents.

The more immigrants we allow to enter, the more infested we become with rodents. They do not have the hygiene we are accustomed to. Making of the plague again that killed millions?

The illegals immigrants are a different type of rodent. They don't eat the wires on the cars. We give them food stamps to keep them from doing that.

Bedbugs, Head Lice, Clamidia, Herpes, AIDS, all comes from Illegal Immigrants flooding into our country. They are a bunch of dirty people that don't practice good hygiene.
