New bill in Arkansas would ban food stamp recipients from buying 'luxury' food items

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - A new bill was introduced on Monday that would prohibit food stamp recipients from buying what the bill calls "luxury food items."

House Bill 2148, introduced by Representative Clint Penzo (R-Springdale), would ban Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients from buying food that is not "conductive" or may be "injurious" to human health. The bill also looks to ban foods that are "high in calories, sugar, and fat with negligible nutritional value."

A similar bill, HB1035, has been making its way through the Arkansas legislature. That bill would only allow recipients to only use food stamps on food or drinks that are considered "healthy foods."

HB1035 passed the House by a vote of 55-39 in January, but has been stuck in the Senate Committee on Public Health, Welfare, and Labor.

I thought that food stamps weren't meant to by those items to begin with. What will Ahmed do to make more now since all that he sells are those items on the list?

If they can't decide which foods are "luxury" foods and non-nutritious, how do they expect the bill to move?

This is not rocket science. Just be careful of the soft drink, potato chip and candy lobbyists, who will claim that their products should be available to every EBT card holder.

Finally, a move in the direction of common sense.
Obviously, the food industry is going to fight it, like they did the soda tax in NYC.
Maryland currently differentiates what is taxable and non-taxable items. Why can't we do the same for what qualifies for SNAP?
But, it has to be done. If taxpayers, via the government, are paying for it, we should be able to limit what the money goes toward.
Just look at the obesity rates in the poorest communities and the highest food stamp usage. Now that we have a common sense POTUS, maybe that can filter down to ... what agency administers SNAP?? HUD? Agriculture?

Great idea, but how is it enforced? It's not fair for the grocery check out clerk to be the bad cop. They might get shot.

No cash, no cards. Eliminate the redundant programs-combine it with WIC and operate it like WIC. If it's not listed on your voucher, or you didn't get EXACTLY what that voucher states (brand, size, etc) you don't get it or you pay for it!

While I was in line at walmart for a return, the lady in front of me was arguing with the customer service rep. She was returning food she had purchased on her ebt. One item was 5 onions, among others. The customer service rep kept saying the system wouldn't let her return the onions, everything else was ok to return. Another employee came over and told her to do it. She was given a walmart gift card. And then taken over to a regular line to return the onions as they had to have a weight. I always see carts full of food from returns. Things like hot dog buns, pop tarts, twinkies. I wondered why someone would buy pop tarts and then return them. When it was my turn,I asked if someone returns food bought on an ebt card, what happens. The customer service rep said they get a walmart gift card. I was shocked. The family with the card was from India. If you want open borders, you must shut the welfare system down. It's not sustainable.

Oh heavens! You must be new here. That's not the way it works here. People read the headline, form their own opinion (often not based on any know facts), share their biased and limited knowledge, shout down and insult anyone who disagrees with them or corrects them, and sometimes even saying things like "I know for a FACT"! (which is always a telltale sign that they don't).

They can't be bothered to read anything most of the time and on the rare occasion that they do read something, they have no comprehension skills to understand what they did read.

Then you have the ones who will even put down the ones who do try to understand and gather more information. I just read a comment where someone was calling people experts in a derogatory manner because they took the time to learn a little bit before they commented.

So you see, we have all types here. But readers are not in the majority. But try to enjoy yourself as best as you can.

Sometimes the comments can be quite entertaining.
