The Maryland Senate Republicans stand up to Democrat bullying
Today I did something I've never done - walked off of the Senate floor. The Democrat majority is pushing through a Resolution that gives Maryland's Attorney General basically unlimited power to sue the Trump administration without approval from the Governor. Normally, the General Assembly authorizes the AG to take specific action and/or the Governor approves action. This bill just had a hearing and was voted out of committee only yesterday. It's a radical change done for partisan, political purposes that have nothing to do with our job as state legislators. I and other Senators, including at least one Democrat, requested a "special order" of the bill for one day so we could review this significant proposal. This is normally granted, especially this early in Session. The Democratic leadership refused - despite allowing special orders on other bills today. By a 28-18 vote they denied our request so the bill moves forward to a final vote tomorrow. 9 of us protested by leaving the Senate floor. Whatever anyone thinks about President Trump or Governor Hogan, the constant attempt to attack and delegitimize the President or go after the Governor's power is out of control. We should be working on improving our state - and doing the job that taxpayers send us to Annapolis to do, not trying to be congressmen and U.S. Senators.
