But a Maryland lawmaker says the $175 maximum isn’t cutting it when it comes to getting drivers to keep their hands off their cellphones while driving.
Del. Frank Turner is proposing a repeal of the tiered system in favor of a penalty that could go as high as $500 dollars. At a hearing before the Maryland House Environment and Transportation Committee this week, Turner said people have not gotten the message. “I see it all the time as I drive down the street — people are using their cellphones.”

As long as the law covers cops too I am for it. Lead by example!
If they can't tax it, they make it illegal and fine people.
Take the car. Enough is enough.
Should be the same penalty as a DUI.
Passing a bus with flashing lights is only to be fined $250! This is not about safety but revenue!
All about the money. I see women putting on makeup while smoking a cigarette and drinking a coffee in the mornings on the bypass. Basically, this is a poor tax and reason to stop/search vehicles. If you can afford a new vehicle, most have hands free talk n text. Poor people ain't got that stuff.
Give them a choice as to what is going to be cut off for breaking the law, Thumbs or Penis, if female, thumbs automatically.
I would love to see stiffer penalties for texting. Don't care about talking, but texting takes your eyes off the road. I'm damn sick and tired of seeing a teenaged girl coming at me in my lane texting.
With all the technology we have, why can't our smart phones figure out who's driving and block the text function. Or just don't text!
When cops stop using theirs than maybe ordinary folks will stop using also. This is just about revenue. Speed cams were used for the same purpose, safety had nothing to do with it.
