Military guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns undaunted by snow

The guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier were undaunted by the D.C. region's first accumulating snowfall of 2017.

Though the Arlington National Cemetery temporarily closed bus tours on Saturday due to slick conditions, the tomb sentinels remained vigilant and conducted a changing of the guard in front of a crowd.

The Old Guard is the oldest active-duty infantry unit in the Army, serving since 1784, according to the Army. They keep a 24-hour vigil at the Tomb of the Unknowns (the official name).

These men are incredible! I see they are still carrying M-14s, which is good. It just wouldn't look right if they were trying to do the Manual of Arms with M-16 variants.

I proudly served in The Old Guard 1967-1969. Had the privilege of being Ike Eisenhower's funeral guard and witnessed the dressing of his body, Also had the VIP section of the Washington Cathedral. Funeral was March 31st 1969 at 4:30 PM. It was just a job back then, but as I reflect back, it was quite an honor. Ike was dressed in a pink dinner jacket, khaki shirt, grey tie and slacks and his brown boots.

I was stationed at Ft. Myer in 1972, where the Old Guard barracks are.

Those are some squared away troops. Focused and dedicated.

We can all learn something from them.
