Democrats Call For Restoring $68M In Education Funding

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Maryland Democratic leaders on Monday called on Republican Gov. Larry Hogan to restore about $68 million in education funding, saying the state’s revenues have turned out better than expected with a $320 million surplus this fiscal year.

House Speaker Michael Busch and Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller said the surplus means it’s wrong for the governor to refuse to spend $68 million that lawmakers set aside in the last legislative session to fully fund an education funding formula that steers more money to parts of the state where education costs more.

“We’re asking the governor to take the money that’s already been appropriated by the Maryland General Assembly, release it to the school systems, let them use it in the classroom, make sure the resources are there for every child in the state of Maryland,” Busch, D-Anne Arundel, said.

Miller said while he considers the governor a friend, he was standing against Hogan’s position not to spend the money.

I see no problem in doing this if we can blow 43 million in Afganistan building a natural gas pump that elsewhere costs no more than 500,000.

Notice NEITHER party suggested giving the taxpayers their money back.
It IS OUR MONEY!
They don't get to charge us too much, then turn around and say "tough break gettin' ripped of by the government, but hey, whaddaya gonna do?" (said with a glare and a slight Italian accent). On second thought, I guess they do....
To them, its THEIR money.
Keep cheering.

9:41 is on it!

Make them operate with a reduced budget - tighten up, like the reset of us had to do. Return this money to the taxpayers - at a minimum in the form of reduced sales/use taxes.....

Tell the dumbocrats to get their cat-skinning hands off our money!

Hogan funded K-12 education at a higher level than any other Governor. What are they complaining about? They see money sitting there and they JUST HAVE TO SPEND IT! Either give it back to the people that it came from or save it for something that is greatly needed.....not greatly wanted by the democrats.

How about using it to pay down the debt instead! 1:22 has it right. Schools already got a raise. Too bad it wasn't as much as they wanted.

If only the money would be used in the classroom! It would never make it to where its needed. It wont escape the clutches of the overpaid supervisors and directors etc. These people would make great politicians. It never is "about the children". Its about how can I spend when and where I want.
