Could This Be The Beginning Of The End For Perdue In Salisbury/Wicomico County?

Perdue has in fact purchased 17 acres in Delmar, DE. on Rt. 13 where they will be relocating some 97 employees from Salisbury to Delmar. Their hope is to expand that business to around 140 employees over the years.

Salisbury News learned that the state of Delaware, (Economic Development) have thrown Perdue a bone they just couldn't refuse and so it begins.

Now here's what I want you to think hard about. They didn't buy a 3 acre parcel, they bought 17 acres. In my honest opinion, I think Perdue is very wise in their decision as they can now hold all that land over the heads of Legislators and yes, even the Governor in Annapolis.

For far too long the state of Maryland has taken advantage of the Poultry industry and Perdue has had their eyes on Delaware and the Carolina's for their future.

ALL of you know I have been preaching for YEARS, it's only a matter of time before everyone gets smart and starts purchasing land in Delmar, Delaware and get the hell out of Salisbury.

Now Perdue is saying that Delaware has been hounding them for many years to make a move and Perdue is starting off with just relocating their Agribusiness Office for starters but 17 acres of land tells me this could be the beginning of the end.

You can try all you want to revitalize Downtown Salisbury and create Economic Development in Wicomico County but again, I said it YEARS ago, the Economic Development, (SWED) needed revitalization years ago and no one listened. Let's see, I think I said, "IT WAS YOUR ELECTION TO LOSE", right?

Fortunately you have a new Governor, (Republican) and a new County Executive, (Republican) and with any hope they'll be able to salvage what's left of Perdue. However, Labinal is now gone and now many employees from Perdue. How much more can Salisbury/Wicomico County take before a total collapse happens.

Oh, that's right. Salisbury can sell off two parking lots and bring in a good 50 to 100 minimum wage jobs at bars and restaurant, I forgot.

As long as they are relocating every bit of the crap downtown on Fitzwater and Rt. 50 where the Ghetto is that would actually be a win win situation for the City of Salisbury. Those thugs can move to Delmar City.

Crime will go down in Salisbury

I sure hope so. Taking the plant at the foot of town and the surrounding neighborhood that could be a great river walk / entertainment venue that would tie in with the north prong project. Also Purdue is just like the hospital and the university they do not deal with local businesses so only than providing jobs and taxes on wages they do not help as much as you would think.

Best thing to happen to downtown Salisbury.

Perdue has had businesses in Delaware since they purchased Swift & Co. in 1976...Bridgeville and Georgetown, DE plus they built the fertilizer plant on old 13 in between Delmar and Laurel...nothing here to really worry about.

RINO council will not help Culver. With slumlord Cannon, they want more low paying jobs and more low income housing so they can get rich off the poor. When will this county wake up and see what has happened to downtown and the county under the democrats. They have destroyed this place.

Crime will go down. Really? Do you think the criminals are the people that actually have jobs?

Joe, Thanks for keeping us up to date. Perdue has said for years they would only put up with so much abuse, and when it was too much they'd pull-up and leave.

I was going to post something intelligent, but after reading the first four posts...not going to waste my time.

PS Quit advertising for Delmar De. I'm trying to move up there
and 'you're' driving land prices up !

Right again Joe.

Delaware is fine now. Move a bunch of Marylanders there and watch what happens. Look at Colorado,Virginia,Florida,North Carolina. Can state income tax in Delaware be far away?

I don't really care. I don't know anyone who does. Their product is too expensive. Yeah, it may taste good but other brands are less expensive and are still tasty.

Nothing but corporate greed. They don't care about the working man - never have. Good riddance you bums

I respectfully disagree that Maryland has taken advantage of the poultry industry. The opposite is true the poultry industry is taking the taxpayers for a ride. Consider.
Billions are spent annually on crop insurance subsidies. This helps keep grain prices down. Without these subsidies farmers would be out of business quickly.
Maryland taxpayers spend millions a year to subsidies cover crops in an attempt to capture all the excess nutrients from manure.
Maryland taxpayers have spent millions in manure sheds and com posters to hold the manure and process all the dead chickens.
Millions more for the concrete pads.
Taxpayers are also paying millions for things such as heaters, fans, insulation, light bulbs, even poultry litter treatment.
Then you have to figure in millions more for mediciad and food stamps, etc for the low paid employees.
This area is a conservative/tea party area but everybody loves this corporate welfare. Hypocritical to me.

Good, move all of this chicken crap out of here!

Can't imagine a downtown revitalization without a move by Perdue.

If Perdue leaves, the economy of this area will collapse. Thank heavens they are here. Revitalize downtown? What a joke. Who in their right mind wants to go downtown.

As farmer in Wicomico county 9:31 I agree.Maryland has not taken advantage of the poultry/ag industry in Maryland,it has tried to end it.Maryland NEEDS agriculture in any form but based on beliefs of conservations and foundations, and politicians/residents from across the bridge,it is what is destroying the bay, beliefs not facts that is.I have a manure shed,I have concrete pads,I plant cover crops, and yes Maryland helps foot the bill, but you type of folks MADE us farmers have to have them, from your bellyaching about smell, about the run off ect...face it,you take the farms from the eastern shore, you ruin the eastern shore...and like was posted before...do your homework.

7:28 I have a question for you.
Isn't it worth trying to improve downtown?

For Petes sake Delmar is like a five minute commute from Salisbury.
My sense is that this is a pure business decision for Perdue.
If it also sends a message to the state of Maryland, what's wrong with that?

6:46 right on.Hopefully those commenting are not voters.doh!

Joe when are you going to run again?

Farmer in Wicomico county. Who owns your chickens, you or the integrator?
Your integrator owns those chickens thus they should be responsible for the mess those chickens produce, not the taxpayers.
Farmers, you should not have to take taxpayer money to control the pollution and upgrade your housing. The companies should be paying more than enough to cover those costs.
Nationally, billions and billions of taxpayer dollars go indirectly to these companies.
Why is this corporate welfare OK?

Perdue started ditching people about FIVE years ago - multiple rounds of layoffs of people with good paying jobs - otherwise unheard of in Salisbury.

A business decision - not a people decision - they had money in the bank and could have held most of these folks during the downturn - now they have open positions and nobody (from here) wants to work for them. They're back to their old ways - relocate people - entice them with signing bonuses and relocation packages and let them stagnate here on the eastern shore.

Hope the new batch of imports rents instead of buys for their sake - so when you get discarded, you're not left holding an unsellable property...unless you take a major loss!

Delaware is much more business friendly than Maryland. There are less restrictions and it's easier to obtain permits.

Reference to comment regarding Maryland taking advantage of the poultry industry.

I should say so - when Senator Modeleno -(western shore left wing dem) - sponsors a 'Biddy Tax' to tax poultry growers per individual chicks - I too say that is going to far. My advise to Perdue - get the hell out of here ASAP. The Annapolis legislature is not only dangerous to your health - but to our individuals wealth.

Get a clue. I haven't seen anyone in shackles or handcuffs working anywhere.
It's a free country. If anyone stagnates why is it a company's fault ?
