Man Recruited Homeless To Help Him Steal As Much As $800K From Home Depot

There’s shoplifting, and then there’s organizing a network of people help you pull off illegal activities: law enforcement in Detroit said a man who recruited homeless people and others on the streets to steal from Home Depot made as much as $800,000 over a few years, by returning those shoplifted items for store credit.

Now that's an entrepreneur! (For the benefit of the literal minded, I'm being sarcastic).
In all seriousness, it's an example of how any system can be gamed. Home Depot allows returns without receipts in exchange for credit in hopes that you'll spend more than your original purchase, not out of the goodness of their hearts. Requiring a receipt would make it much more difficult for these kinds of theft rings to operate.

just what I was going to say. Require receipts.
