Wal-Mart’s Pay Raise Backfires

Wal-Mart’s minimum-wage hike this year, intended to improve morale and retain employees, is having the opposite effect for many senior workers who didn’t get a raise, according to a new Bloomberg report.

New Wal-Mart workers started making a minimum of $9 an hour in April and will get at least $10 an hour in February. Some workers are complaining that new employees are enjoying the pay increase, while others aren’t seeing any raise at all.

“It is pitting people against each other,” Charmaine Givens-Thomas, a 10-year Wal-Mart veteran, told Bloomberg. “It hurts morale when people feel like they aren’t being appreciated. I hear people every day talking about looking for other jobs and wanting to remove themselves from Wal-Mart and a job that will make them feel like that.”

Some workers suspect that their hours are being cut and annual raises reduced in order to pay for the wage increase for newer workers — a claim that Wal-Mart denies.

“It took me four years to get to $10.80. When minimum wage goes up we don’t receive a pay increase unless we are under the minimum,” one worker wrote in a comment on Walmart’s corporate blog, CBS reported.

“Now our 2 newest associates are making $10.75 and my annual raise is going from 40 cents down to 26 cents. Apparently experience doesn’t get rewarded.”

Cause they don't care about the employees, only the image.

get rid of their egos and they won't be so butt hurt. they were fine with their pay when they thought they made more than someone else.

A forty cent an hour raise, if you can get 40 hours in a week, is sixteen dollars. Maybe twelve or thirteen after taxes and so on. They couldn't give their employees that much?

They didn't care. Bend to the PC crowd and allow the welfare crowd to make more than seasoned employees. Watch how bad customer service gets now.

No one who works full time should qualify for welfare. Think about it.

So don't work for Walmart and don't shop there.

unfortunately the liberal misfits who "thought" this was a great thing to do still won't understand.

Look at what happened to that fool out west who started paying everybody $70k per year. Same thing occurred. The good workers felt unappreciated and they left. Now the losers who got bumped to 70 grand can't do half as much as those that left and the place is going bankrupt.

it's called socialism. Everywhere it's tried it never woks. And you know who keeps trying to do it? Liberals. That's why liberals are truly insane...they keep doing the same thing over and over again and expect different results.

And the simple concept of paying people a livable wages till eludes everyone.

If all the complainers job's were to deal with the public, they would not last a month.

the only ones who will make more are the ones that were already making more that what this raise gave them. why would customer service get bad now that some people are making more than they used to make? if the "welfare crowd" works there, they can't be on welfare.

your whole post makes no sense whatsoever. but it does show your prejudice, hate and presumed racism.
