Ben Carson: 'We Don't Need a Department of Veterans Affairs'

Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson said Wednesday that the Department of Veterans Affairs should be folded into the Defense Department to cut the size of the federal government.

"We don’t need a Department of Veterans Affairs," the retired pediatric neurosurgeon told financial guru Dave Ramsey on his syndicated radio show. "Veterans Affairs should be folded in under the Department of Defense. And it should be a smooth transition."

Carson also called for health savings accounts for veterans, allowing them to seek treatment at any hospital or medical center in the nation. VA centers also should address such specialized medical care as traumatic brain injuries, limb replacements and research.

And putting vets to work within a year of discharge? Absolutely!

I'm definitely not feeling this.

Ben Carson is correct. But we also don't need MOST of the government agencies that we pay for to impose rules and regulations on us.

Why? A healthy vet who leaves the military is only doing one thing. Quiting his job. Plenty of Americans are struggling for work. Why make it harder and longer for those who have already been struggling to find work when they never quit a job. Any wounded vet I agree ....vet them to work. Back to a somewhat normal life. But not the healthy ones. The ones who just quit without anything lined up. I reenlisted three times. Not because I loved it. Which I did. But because there was no work. It's job security. Why leave it?

Health Savings Accounts for people who we are told are frequently not paid enough to live a middle class lifestyle? It's a scam to spend less money on them so the people who have money can pay less tax.

Just give jobs to all of them when they are like any other cross section of humanity. Some capable and some not, some addicts, some not. They all do not have the ability to live a responsible civilian life.

Nobody is equal, not all are capable, and that unfortunately includes some per cent of discharged warriors. Just read the news.

The successful wealthy Doctor needs to heal himself and get out of politics.

From someone who never served. Many (like me) after 10 years of service were forced out.
