140th Preakness Stakes sets attendance record at Pimlico Race Course

A record crowd turned out to see American Pharoah capture the second jewel of the Triple Crown at Saturday’s Preakness Stakes.

In total 131,680 fans turned out for the 140th running of the Preakness, trouncing last year’s attendance record of 123,469. The infield at Pimlico Race Course was packed with revelers raving to the beats of Dutch DJ Armin van Buuren, celebrities mingled in the corporate village, and the grandstands were swimming with pastels and frilly hats.

Local business leaders, celebrities and athletes mingled between about a dozen tents in the corporate village. Domino Sugar, Dewalt and Transamerica were among the companies hosting corporate parties, and Under Armour Inc.’s tent was a hot spot for big names in professional and college sports. Guests at the sportswear maker’s tent included downhill skier Lindsey Vonn, Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, and University of Maryland Maryland men’s basketball coaches past and present — Gary Williams and Mark Turgeon.
