Ocean City Shines Light On "Bus Cop" Campaign

(OCEAN CITY, Md.) - The next time you step on a public bus in ocean city, you may not know who you're sitting next to.

Well ocean city police want you to at least know that it could be one of its officers come summer.

"There's a mindset that maybe if you tell people ahead of time that there's police officers on the bus, then hopefully, it will diffuse any bad behavior," said Jessica Waters, Ocean City Communications Director.

The campaign is known as "Bus Cop."

This sounds great but where are all these cops going to come from. You never see any on the boardwalk even in the middle of the summer.

Bring it to salisbury esp shore up buses.

You're not looking very hard.

They've been doing it for years. One of those cops killed in the plane crash was infamous for uc work.

Good idea cause OC is gonna become just like Florida during spring break. Good luck guys in blue.

12:15 I look very hard. I live directly on the boardwalk and am sitting out on my deck from sun up until late into the evening. I'm independently wealthy so have all the time in the world to make observations. Even guests have commented to me on the lack of officers they see on the boardwalk. Strangers have come up to me to ask if the boardwalk is "safe" since they don't see any officers up there and if it's okay to let their teenagers go walking by themselves. I also know and talk to a lot of long time business owners who say the same thing and wonder why it's not like the old days when the officers came into the businesses and introduced themselves to the owners and employees. Believe what you want but the fact is they are rarely to be seen up there.

They'd better have minimum two, or better yet three or more working the same bus, no cop working alone for his own safety.

They will hire 73 year old "Special Cops" for the job.

It is sad that the OC bus system needs air marshals. Just another reason we no longer spend out time or money there.

5:42, have you per-registered for Kindergarten yet? If not, you need to get your parents to take you there.

Since the talk is about not seeing the OC Police has been done for years. It is called plain clothes and they rotate them so no one is constantly on the buses.
But really who cares that you are on camera from one end of the boardwalk to the other. Those cameras can count the hairs on your head to the waters edge. They are being monitored.

I'm not sold on the camera idea. I think they help solve crime more than they prevent it. Just look at how many convenience store and bank robberies we've had in this area alone lately. All banks and quite a few of those stores have cameras and more often than not the footage is grainy and shot from the wrong angle to reveal much if anything at all to aid in identification.
Crime camera systems are a godsend to the well connected and big lobby camera manufacturers and installers and can be a classic study in- Throwing Technology At The Problem- when more low-tech measures such as increased numbers of officers walking as opposed to driving or on bikes would work better.

I seen something on fb about how they can take a quality picture of you going 70mph on a roller coaster but can't take a good STILL shot of a bank robber.

We had the conversation this winter, with those in our circles, some who are long time OC business owners-some 20+ years- that while crime might not be as bad as thought, the perception is there.
Whereas it used to be from visitors "where's Thrashers" where is Dumser's" the Number One question has become "is OC safe?"

Tell her to familiarize herself with polo and then spend her time and any extra money she may have traveling to the Saturday evening Twilight Polo matches (May-Sept) at Great Meadows Polo Club in The Plains, VA. The Twilight matches are themed which makes for great fun when deciding what to wear. They have a web site. Look for Great Meadows Foundation.
